Can my school legally ask for my Apple ID and password for a school-issued iPad?

So I need to turn in my school-issued iPad at the end of the school year. One of the things the school wants students to do is provide their Apple ID and password for their iPads. I just wanted to know if the school is legally allowed to do this.

As iToaster said, they're concerned about Activation Lock. The school can ask you for anything they wish, and you have the right to refuse. If you refuse, however, they are probably within their legal rights to refuse to issue you an iPad or demand you return one they have already issued you.

This not being a technical issue, any further discussion of the matter is not really appropriate. This is an issue your parents would need to discuss with your school's administration to see if they can work out a better policy. Perhaps a better policy would be to require you to prove when you hand the iPad in that iCloud and Activation Lock are not present or have been removed. But again, that's between you, your parents, and the school to work out.

Regards.

Business do this all the time.

Delete all personal information off the device.

You could deactivate you current account from the device. Get a new account and assign the ipad to the new account. Give this new account to the school.

Activation lock

Find My iPad

"With iOS 7, Find My iPhone includes a new feature called Activation Lock, which is designed to prevent anyone else from using your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch if you ever lose it. It starts working the moment you turn on Find My iPhone in iOS 7."

Do this and turn in your iPad. The school will not need your ID/password.

At schools, we really don't want to have to know your apple ID and password, but because of the activation lock and management tools that have to be used, you cannot do some maintenance or reimaging of ipads without the apple ID and password. And, when some students leave a school, the school needs to be able to re-issue that ipad to give to another student. Tech departments can't possibly work with every individual student at the exact moment, when there are 800 students turning in ipads at the end of school. There are some more changes coming in school iPad management from Apple, we hope, that will make it even simpler and not have get all of the information to be efficient. At this point, know that schools are only asking for your information because they can't always fix things for you, or process an ipad without it.
