why can't I load m4p songs to mp3 player?

When I buy songs from itunes why do they download as M4P files that I can't then put on my mp3 player? I have a iRiver mp3 plyer. (No I dont have an ipod yet, waiting for my current mp3 player to die but in the meantime I want to listen to my music!) how do you convert m4p t0 mp3??
pls help.

Store purchases are in protected AAC format (,m4p), that is ALL the store has ever offered for download. As you have discovered, store purchases are only compatible with an iPod. All this being said, you can burn your purchase to an audio CD, that audio CD will act like any CD you would purchase in the store.

The easiest thing for you to do is burn your purchased songs to an audio cd, then import them into your library (you will need to set the import to MP3 for this to work for you). If you have re-writable cd's that will work too and you can just erase them for the next album and import.

whoa, i had absolutely no idea that it worked like this. it never said anything about not being able to play it in winamp... that's a bummer. guess this this is the first AND last song i bought in itunes for now...
