I just bought one (15"/2.16GHz standard configuration) and it's still in the box. I think I might return it after reading about the headaches and heartaches. My PowerBook G4 is old and cranky and needs to be replaced, but at least I get wireless, my battery doesn't "swell", and the power adapter has yet failed to burn my fingerprints off.
So, I may be asking in the wrong place (because this is a forum that attracts people with complaints), but I'm wondering - is there a real alternative for Mac notebook users right now? Do the many problems I've read about exist in pretty much all the MBPs out there? Or has anyone heard of a small population of users who are happy and carefree?
I don't know how much longer I can sit and look at this unopened box - but I don't want to have shelled out $2400 for a really bad experience.
Well I'd return it...but not because the MBP is a
terrible machine. It's NOT. I LOVE mine. It's a great
improvement over my PB G4 and I thought that machine
was near perfect.
But I'd return it because the Core 2 Duo MBPs will be
out in the next few weeks. It will be a nice
speedbump for probably no extra money. You don't want
to be the person who buys a $2400 laptop only to find
out you could have done better if you held out for a
couple more weeks. (At least I wouldn't).
FWIW my machine did have the inverter buzz but Apple
fixed it and now it's quiet as any laptop I've ever
used. The top left corner gets hot...but so does my
PB G4.
Harry,
YES!! That's what I've been thinking. I am going to return this sleek, inviting black box, and then sit on my hands for 10 days and see what happens at Apple. I will then go and repurchace, and open/enjoy my new mbp.
Thanks to everyone who helped restore my faith in a non-pc world.
I recently purchased my first Mac notebook computer, a 2GHz MacBook Pro. I've had it for a few weeks now, and I can honestly say that it's the best computer I have ever used. When I compare it to my work-issued Dell Latitude 620, the difference in build quality is amazing, with the Apple being a far superior machine.
I have had no issues with wireless, and only a few system freezes (only while using apps that run under Rosetta, like Photoshop CS2). The only time it gets ridiculously hot is if I use it on my lap for an extended period while the AC adapter is plugged in - which the manual clearly discourages! I have had no issues with heat when using it as recommended.
I admire your restraint ... but it's time to crack that box open and have a go!
I've had my macbook pro (15in 2.0ghz) for almost a week now and it is my first mac. I haven't had any problems and I am happy with it.
Soon I will boosting it with 2gigs of ram and possible a 100/7200rpm hdd.
Should be even better after that.
The only thing that I noticed is that my mouse (attached, not the trackpad) which is a microsoft mouse seems a little sticky when I move it compared to my mouse on my pc desktop.
I wonder if it is because it is not a mac mouse. Anyone knows???
MOUSE: I have a non-mac mouse, but I forget the brand, and it is not with me. Had it several years, and used it on older PWB with no problems. I don't think the brand of USB input device should make a difference.
I have a tablet usually on my MBP, but have to admit I have not tried my mouse. Wacom tablet works same on MBP, PWB and mac G4 desk.
I like my MBP. I learned to like it even more after Apple replaced the battery, I added another memory card and got the System Preferences sorted out. It does take a bit of time and understanding to get the preferences to in sync with my needs. I also added a wireless mighty mouse and using the MBP became more enjoyable.
I just bought my first Mac. I am still nervous with this becasue it is all so new to me. I bought the MBP 2.16 15 inch screen as well. I am finding bumps in the road such as transfering all of my documents off the PC, music, plus others. I have lots of questions and I know I am going to drive customer service and the store crazy until I get the hang of it.
Aside from the batery problem that I'm having
probably due to the early build up, this has been a
great machine. The universal programing has been
sensational.
Get it out of the box and run with it.
or if you really want to complain, go buy a pc laptop
and be prepared for hours of being on the phone to
the service center.
I've been computing since 1984. My first computer was a TI (Texas Instrument TI4A). I've been using DOS and Windows systems since that time... until now. Take it from a person who knows; this thing (MBP) is the best thing since sliced bread. My MBP has performed flawlessly. I wouldn't trade it for anything else. If you go through life basing your decisions on the negative experiences of others, you'll miss so many wonderful things. Don't let your fear cause you to miss a good thing.
I'm not sure how I resolved the connection problem. I know I installed coconut wifi and that helped. then I reset my router to WAP encryption from WEP that helped even more.
Last thing I did was go out and get an Airport extreme base station and that thing RAWKS! 🙂
I have had my mbp for 2 months. It's a week 25 build. It has been completely flawless, no issues whatsoever. I upgraded from a powerbook G4. It is the best computer i have ever owned.
I would suggest that if you read the discussion board for any product that you'd purchase, there will be those with problems. No different here. Most of us love their MBP's and don't regret our purchases.
Open it and you'll see what i mean. Report back with your impressions.
To be honest, I started visiting this forum for help with a defective mac mini and rarely post unless I see a topic that I am certain I know the answer to. I can say that I love my macbook pro - I have had no problems with it, it isn't any warmer than my powerbook was (when you really stress it, which xcode tends to do nicely, the fans kick in and it actually gets cooler...louder, but cooler). I know four people who have purchased MacBook Pro's and two people who have purchased MacBooks - of that group, one had to return his MacBook for discoloration issues, that was it. This machine has the best battery life of any Apple portable I ever owned (I easily get three hours), it is faster than any portable I have ever owned, and it puts my dual 2.0 g5 to shame when running universal apps (handbrake, for instance).
Definitely enjoy it, I can't see the Core2Duo processor really topping the CoreDuo too much, mainly because I've seen them perform and unless your writing optimized code for that platform using the new instruction set in your assembly (not compiling down to it), you aren't going to see a performance gain. In fact, since its 64bit, you might see a performance hit since your data registers will be double the width (aka load up on RAM). The Core2Xeon on the other hand...*drools over the new mac pro*
I love my MBP, it replaced my 1Ghz g4 FW800 powermac.
waaaaayyy faster! although it's not as stable, i need to reboot more often...but i think it's just because of rosetta. as more and more of the apps i use go unibin the machine is running more stable.
