How Do I Make a Mask With Shape?

I may be missing something, but I can't figure this out.

I inserted a picture from iPhoto into my Pages document. I then went to Format to apply a Mask. But "Mask with Shape" isn't selectable (it's grey). I am able to apply a normal (rectangular) mask, though. How can I apply a Mask with Shape? What am I doing wrong?

I'm not sure how you're trying to do this, but I'll explain how I do it.

First, make sure you're in the object layer by clicking outside of the layout area. Insert your photo & then choose the shape you want to use. Position the shape where you want it on the photo & then select both the photo & the shape. Go to Format > Mask with shape & the masked area will appear faded. Now, click outside the layout area to deselect the objects & you should see the masked photo.
