Shuffle won't play purchased music

Hello,

I recently bought an Ipod Video and I gave my shuffle to my wife. I have reformattted it to her computer, running the ipod updater. So it should be wiped clean and reformatted to her computer.

Her PC will recognize the shuffle and will allow her to drop and drag all songs onto it. But it will only play non-purchased music. In other words, all of my old cd collection that I copied. But it will not play any mp4 songs bought from itunes even though they show up on the itunes list as being on the shuffle.

Any ideas?

Thanks!!!!

gosh, thank you!

i'll try the ipod/safari options when i'm not running off somewhere, but i just quickly wanted to thank you for replying and putting such effort into trying to help me ⚠

the apple symbol doesn't have a disc burning option on the ibook, so i guess that does speak for itself!

thanks again

Alright..."he" said that you guys need to restore your ipods...and that should fix the problem...it did not for me. BAD NEWS, he said the only thing to do was to send it end and get another one...referbished, to set that up it is depot.info.apple.com/ipodshuffle type in your serial number ect...for me it was free although i do not get the "pick up delivery" part but im delivering. Type in credit card number but if it says it is free it is...(read fine print) and do as it says. HOPE SO MUCH this helps...

Thanks and Happy Hoidays!

1. When did you purchase your iPod? I got mine last Christmas and if you're telling me iPods have an 11 month shelf life that's ridiculous.

That leads to...

2. I find it interesting that it's only occurring for recently downloaded songs. My old mp3's work. My old purchases work. My songs ripped from CD's work. The only songs that don't work are the ones I just bought and they will work if I burn them to a CD and rip them. I AM NOT AN EXPERT by any means, but how is it that everyone's iPod has just gone bad b/c the songs they themselves supplied do not work on their product? (I know you can't answer that, but I kind of wish you did)

3. You should have raised enough noise to demand a 2nd generation iPod why didn't you? (lol, just kidding)

I have been looking into this as I am experiencing the same problems with recently purchased songs not playing on my 1st gen shuffle but playing on my mac.
I suspect that the people that rip the music for publishing for Apple's store have made a mistake or (more likely) they are using a more up to date version of ripping software or a new version of iTunes that is not available to the genreal public yet. As a result, until the latest version of iTunes is realeased, we will all experience this problem. Whilst it seems to be restricted to Shuffle's, if more changes are made to the in-house software, it may not be long until other iPod models are affected.
We can only hope that our emails to iTunes support and the iTunes music store get passed on to the guys and gals that write the iTunes software. After all, it's iTunes that handles both the music and the iPod Software Updates now.

Same problem. I downloaded the new Gwen Stefani album. It transfers to my shuffle. I can play the songs from the shuffle while it's connected to the USB port, BUT once I eject it and attach headphones, nothing happens. The green light does light up when I hit play, but no sound. This is absolutely ridiculous!! I tried to alert Apple to the situation, but when I pull my account up in the iTunes store and click on "Purchase History" and then "Report a Problem", nothing happens!! "Report a Problem" just disappears. I can't find any other way to e-mail iPod. I guess I'll cross my fingers and hope a new Shuffle firmware update or new iTunes version comes out soon and this is fixed.

There are a number of good troubleshooting pages, such as this one:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303854

However after following the steps short of rebuilding the library, I still can not play my recently purchased music.

So the following page includes a form at the bottom to submit details about the iTunes order number and a particular song title with which you are having problems. This will be good info for Apple.

Folks:

Like many of you, I purchased a few albums yesterday on ITunes and they do not play on the 1st generation Shuffle. They upload fine and play in ITUNES itself but the songs are skipped over when you play them on the Shuffle. Instead of relenting to burning them on CD and then reloading them, I decided to call tech support.

I spent 45 minutes on the phone with an Apple troubleshooter guy. We went through the entire restore process using the IPOD reset utility program and of course it did not work. After trying a few other ideas, he transferred me over to an Apple tech representative. The Apple rep wanted to create a new user account on my computer to see if there was some weird interaction between the Shuffle and the existing user account. I could not do it tonight since I'm on my work computer (with associated firewall issues) but I will call him back to see what magical fix he is thinking a new user account will do to trick the Shuffle into playing recently purchased music. The tech guy was telling me that they have not changed encoding software on the music... I don't know. I think the Apple folks need to look into this issue some more.... All of you having this problem, keep calling tech support to complain. Maybe we can move goliath into fixing the issue soon.
