HD Speed Test Utility?

One that gets a lot of use by AMUG, Barefeats, and others, is Intech's QuickBench/ZoneBench which are very helpful.

Disk Utility can check you drive to a certian extend. What exactly were you think of checking? An inital writing of zeros to your RAID set (individually or as a set) should have sorted most issues out.

Then there's Helios LAN Test disk test can be used.
Ignore the other tests it offers, set it to gigabit network in the prefs (this will do 300 MB file read & write). then select drive to test and go (preferably multiple tests with averaging) - again best on freshly erased drive. (*)

KONA system test can also be used to measure large sequential transfer performance.

But at $90, I wouldn't call this cheap. I looked, and couldn't find a demo or free version of this. It would be nice to have just the module for benchmarking drives...don't really need all the other stuff...

At the bottom of the main page is QB/ZB for $24.95. And I linked to a couple freebies. Getting accurate disk performance readings in OS X is not easy. Apple pulled their own DiskBasher that use to be part of the CHUD Tools.

Speedtools has the best SMART diagnostic tool I've seen or used along with non-destructive test and auto map bad sectors and some other utilities.

Everyone wants something... for nothing. And yet someone had to spend time and do some work to create it. There is another $20 tool, and I think Blackmagic to test to insure your storage RAID meets minimum requirement for SD and HD video.

Thanks! I overlooked that $24.95 option...much more reasonable price for something that I will use just a couple of times to benchmark my drive config...
