On the camera connection Kit the socket that plugs into the iPad looks too big to fit. isn't the iPads socket a lightning input how does the connection kit socket fit into it?
I would like to plug a guitar into GarageBand what exactly are the things I need?

It's for the older iPads (generations 1 through 3). I don't think it'll work with yours if you have the lightning connector.
You need either this or this for your iPad.

I think the lightning to USB is the one I would need. So do the newer iPads have a different connection now?
I'm pretty sure my iPad is maybe less than two years old I can't believe it's already obsolete.

Your iPad isn't obsolete at all. The only iPad that's reaching that point is the iPad 1 which can only run iOS 5.1.1 and has no cameras. All the other iPads support the latest version of iOS and most of the accessories.
And yes, newer iPads have a different connection. I believe it was introduced with the iPad 4.
