How do I make background out of focus (blur)

Hey:

We shot some interior footage where I need to blur the background so that my actors stand out. These are medium shots photographed using a combination of BMCC 2.5K RAW and 4K prores. How do I grade the footage so that the background is blurred (out of focus)?

Your task will be extremely difficult to the point where it will not be worthwhile.

You would need to somehow select the background by creating a mask and then adding a blur filter.

In Photoshop with a still image this process would not be too hard but with a moving image you would have to create innumerable masks and keyframes.

It could be done but the effort and time involved would be astronomic.
