You may try & see if function of the camera may be restored via a reset.
Read through the article(s), & try actual resets at least once; if the other
troubleshooting ideas fail to change the situation before SMC/PMU reset.

If nothing else, it would be a matter of troubleshooting. Do this reset at least
twice; and let the startup sound chime three times before releasing the keys
you are to hold down immediately from startup.

Be sure to test more than one Apple camera app in more than one user account.
It would be helpful if you posted the iMac sub-model you have as well as the Mac OS version it is running.
