My Macbook Pro is going extremely slow. Please help

Hi. My macbook pro that I purchased in 2010 has been running extremley slow the past few months. Especially when I run anything like spotify or netflix. My computer gets extremley hot to the point I can probably flip it over and cook eggs on it!! The fan is extremley loud! It is extremley slow compared to how it was when i first purchased this bad boy. It has even crashed a few times this week and when I turn it back on it gives me a message saying it crashed because of a system error or something like that. I ran an etreCheck but I dont know exactly how to understand it. Can anyone help me out?

2 Points;

try hardware monitor that will give you colour coded graphs of all the main hardware functions re temperature, fan speed etc.

AS for the machine running slow, can I suggest that if the machine is hot then it will be slowing down the processing speed etc to try to limit the temperature so the problem could just be the temperature. Have you ever opened it and either cleaned out the dust yourself or had an Apple trained engineer do it?

MAchines get very dirty after several years.

"I can screenshot you the iStatPro to prove the fans are running over 5000rpm. If iStatPro isn't accurate anymore then do you know of another program that can show the rpm?" yes but you can not send a screenshot of fans at over 6000rpm 😁.

iStatpro is accurate ! not compatible means (I am told) that it will not run correctly, but the values are "correct": it reads the values from the system, it does not measure itself.

"The computer is still running slow whenever i do anything strenuous like open Spotify, iPhoto, logic. Even pages seems to be strenuous," This is not normal.

Update OSX with the Combo updater.

Take Spotify and iTuneshelper out of LoginItems, with the minus sign underneath: iTuneshelper is not important, is started automatically when needed. Start Spotify when needed, Quit when done. Let the Canon IJ driver in the LoginItems ! when you still use the Canon MF-Printer-Scanner.. But check if it is really the latest (I think you should check on the Canon site).

I'll have you know I updated the OSX earlier (and I didn't use a backup!!!)

I will take spottily and ituneshelper out of login items but how exactly do i do that. and should the canon driver really be an issue if I hardly even use it?

I guarantee i will show you a screenshot of the fans at 6000rpm or higher. in fact i guarantee that i can possibly make a video of me flipping the macbook pro and cooking eggs on the back. thats how hot this thing gets.

Just back from a 600Miles trip by car.

If you never use the Canon driver, take it out of LoginItems too.

Go to SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems, there is the list, click them and use the minus sign underneath to remove them from the list.

Afterwards you do a restart.

Do not cook eggs on the back, just send me the picture. 😁

Your etrecheck list says 10.9.2: Mavericks is now on 10.9.5. Use the Combo update as I said before.

Oct 11, 2014 12:56 PM in response to psploco

You did not tell me about the combo, and your last etrecheck did not show it.

So the combo update did not make the issue go away?

Please keep your temper down.

Explain everything that you think I must know. Leave the emotions out.

What tool you use to measure the fans and other things.

Make a new etrecheck list. V2.0.1.

make a screengrab of your Applications folder, make screengrab of your utilities folder.

Let me think.

Be precise.

After use you can delete GoogleUpdateUninstaller.

I am not sure about the qualities of Phoneclean, is there a real uninstaller with it? I use iMazing (formerly Diskaid).

Google Chrome is a sloppy programmed app, memory leaker, not safe. If you want to use something else than Safari, use Firefox or Opera: very fast, safe. Do not use more browsers at the same time.

You do not need Cafeine: you better uninstall it.

Matlab: see the discussion

Is the Akai mixer mavericks compatible? Same question for ZNES simulator?

You know my ideas about uTorrent and the apps downloaded with that.

Stuffit superfluous, uninstall

In general: you have a lot of software downloaded from sites as Softonic, Download.com and other "aggregators", these often bring adware and malware with it by manipulated installers. Maybe you should uninstall all those and redownload from the developer sites or the Appstore. Use Adwaremedic script from Thomas Reed site thesafemac.com
