Will an iPad 2 be upgradable to iOS 8?

I have an iPad first gen that only was upgradable to iOS 5.11. I am thinking about getting a refurbished 2nd Gen. Will that be upgradable to iOS 8 when it comes out this Fall, or should I look for a newer refurb gen like a 3rd or Air?

iPad, iOS 5.1.1

Now, this is where I would get insistent with the Genius Bar Support Person and point out that the demonstrated and shown problem is on a freshly installed system and thus there has to be a resolution in the matter. I would ask for an escalation of their matter to their store supervisor. If nothing was resolved there then I would try the Apple Support Line, ask for an escalation from them, giving the ticket number from the store and ask for a specialist or an engineer to get on it for you. I would start stepping through the escalation process.

BUT do note that this factory fresh install has worked for others, so it could still work for those just reading this for the first time.

Anyone who buys an iPad 2 - TODAY - from Apple, gets ALL THE BENEFITS of a brand new device from ALL the Apple Services offered and the FULL TWO YEARS WARRANTY (if you want it). That's how Apple treats that purchase of an iPad 2!

AND ... it is LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE to revert to an older system ... going back to iOS 7 or whatever earlier one. Let me repeat ... it is LITERALLY and TECHNICALLY IMPOSSIBLE to do that. Apple quit signing those releases!

iOS 8 update has rendered our iPad 2 totally useless.

The fact that every iPad 2 out there that has updated to iOS 8 have all experienced this problem is indicative of one thing: profitable obsoletion. The hardware works just fine and can probably carry on for another 3 years, however it is by design to force consumers to purchase new hardware. Otherwise, it would have been simple and easy to revert back, but it's not. Do not forget that during Apple's presentation for the new iPads they were proud of their iOS 8 adoption rate, they would never say during these presentations that all of the iPad 2s are useless, but this kind of thing increases share value.

We've been duped - now we'll have to jump through hoops to revert to the iOS that worked or are forced to either root the iPad to install an iOS that works or buy a new one. Personally, I want to buy a new one because newer software that is being developed will work better on it, however I can't even afford to buy a used iPad 3...

ABout the majority being happy with The new 8 release, I say 'maybe'. There is also this thing called Apathy. I am part of the complaining minority, yes, my IPad2 is very sluggish, has a very annoying jumping keyboard, and it freezes way too often...never was that way pre 8. At this point, I am trying to be patient and wait for next release that will fix what is wrong with my ipad.

I think the only fix you are going to find is an iPad Air for $399. I have turned on "Reduce Motion" under Accessibility on my iPad 2 which has elimanted the lagging issues when closing apps. But still having issues with editing text and Safari not responding to inputs from time to time. Shame on Apple for allowing a device to be upgraded when they had to know there were going to be issues. Lesson learnt on my side to... Don't upgrade firmwares until checking here for problems.

That's NOT TRUE ... for one clearly obvious reason ... that you can see straight from Apple's own website. Apple is selling on their online store website ... the iPad 2 -- TODAY -- along with a buyer being able to get the full two years of warranty (if they want AppleCare). That means Apple intends to support this iPad 2 (that they are selling today) for another TWO YEARS!!

Apple is not selling iPad 2 models today, if they want you to move over to an iPad Air ... LOL ...

Well, that's a statement from ignorance ... :-) ... because there have been many iPad 2 owners who have said their iPad 2 is working fine after the update. And then there are others, who have had initial problems, and have had no problems after they reset theirs to factory default and did a clean system install with their iTunes program. At the worst, this is an outright lie, and at the best, it's indicative of ignorance of what the other iPad 2 users have said.

Your statement here is ... indicative of one thing ... an imagination that doesn't match reality ... :-) ...

STar Traveler, you should stop insulting people. Saying that the problems we are experiencing are due to our own device and that we should have it checked for hardware malfunction is taking us for dummies. My IPad2 was fully functional with IOS7 and NOT so with IOS8, so logically we can conclude that the problems are due to release 8 and not from any other sources.

When other users here have posted that they have solved their problems with doing the various solutions proposed, and especially with the reset to factory default condition ... just that alone shows that there are problems that have nothing to do with iOS 8 ... because these users are able to get their iPads back to running condition and in fine order, without Apple having done anything else ... other than that user applying the solution.

Now, the solutions offered here ... are a variety ... and there are a variety of good results, but there are always "some" who find that user solutions will not help them. They can go to Apple Support (as Apple Support is not here on this forum) ... where they will get Apple's Official help ... of which it is the highest rated, by other users, in the industry.

The bottom line is that there are many users who have solved their own problems withe the solutions here, and others who have had no problems at all, in the first place. And as I have said many times before, that doesn't mean someone is not having problems, but it also doesn't mean that Apple is the cause of the problems either!
