Will an iPad 2 be upgradable to iOS 8?

I have an iPad first gen that only was upgradable to iOS 5.11. I am thinking about getting a refurbished 2nd Gen. Will that be upgradable to iOS 8 when it comes out this Fall, or should I look for a newer refurb gen like a 3rd or Air?

iPad, iOS 5.1.1

What I did was restore to factory as mentioned here, then installed iOS 8.0.2 from scratch. I did NOT restore from backup. It seams like a lot more work but you get a really clean install. My photos, music, calendar, etc I synced back.

The price you pay is you have to redo any settings, reinstall Applications. You loose your old text messages and history.

What you get is an iPad 2 that performs pretty well, and on my 32GB I have 10GB free after clearing out all that cruft! I have heard iPads get slow when storage gets tight but I can't confirm that.

One other thing, I disabled Background App Refresh completely and a few location services like...

System Services;

Location-Based iAds OFF

Share my Location OFF

Frequent Locations OFF

Diagnostics and Usage OFF

Popular Near Me OFF

I intended to sell this iPad 2 if it went bad, but its good enough I’ll keep it. Not blazingly fast, but usable. For example I can easily watch Netflix with a fast WiFi.

One last note, when you first run your applications they start slow, after things get cached it gets much better. The only application that seems to start slow all the time is Facebook, I hope they'll fix that.

it's horrible!!! Constant crashes, cannot copy and past from Safari, cannot complete purchase transactions, extremely slow opening apps, even downloading mail is working properly. Terrible, terrible, terrible!! My IPad Mini is less than three months old and I absolutely regret purchasing it now! I have been an Apple fan for yeArs - not anymore and I will never buy Apple again!

Hello I too were having the same issues with my iPad 2 after updating to ios8. I've been so frustrating with the following issues with safari:

1. I hate how every time u have multiple tabs open i safari and u jump from one tab to the next u have to wait until it reloads.

2. Browsing in Safari is super slow n choppy response

3. Browser locks ips and freezes

4. I have trouble trying to copy text in a browser window

WELL I have a solution for everyone and it has seem to fix the issues listed above.

these setting will work for iPad and iPhone 5 or 5s.

The issue is caused with Google search engine n changing your search engine will fix the issues listed above.

GO to settings then safari then search engine then select any OTHER search engine other than google.

I personally use duckduckGO n works great.

i Hope this helps others out there as we all love our Apple products n with the current update we have all thought WHAT the **** Apple was thinking when they release IOS 8 before making sure the small stuff like this works perfect

I haven't noticed the problems that you list are as severe as indicated, but there have been some minor issues. No. 1 doesn't happen with me unless I'm using up too much RAM with too many other apps at the same time, using it up. I clear the apps and squeeze the memory down and I'm okay.

On No. 2 ... I haven't noticed that.

On No. 3 ... it happens, but not very much ... just once in a while.

On No. 4 ... no problem there.

However, I'll give it a try and see if it makes any difference with what I do see on mine.

No worries about your apps being lost. They are freely downloadable again. In terms of any other problems you're having, if no other solutions have helped ... then a reset to factory default condition may be in order. Make sure your backup is completed and then reset to factory default and don't restore your backup just yet. After that's dome, then see how your iPad works without your backup files on it. You want to verify it works right in that state first. Let me know how it goes.
