Will an iPad 2 be upgradable to iOS 8?

I have an iPad first gen that only was upgradable to iOS 5.11. I am thinking about getting a refurbished 2nd Gen. Will that be upgradable to iOS 8 when it comes out this Fall, or should I look for a newer refurb gen like a 3rd or Air?

iPad, iOS 5.1.1

you are right, I never considered anything else than Apple but now I do, thanks to Apple's arrogance. I downloaded release 8 by mistake and once installed on my iPad2 I could not back out. I think this is the biggest mistake and injustice Apple is doing to its customers, not providing a way to recapture the previous release. I am still using my ipad with all its flaws but it is annoying. I refuse to install 8.01 on my iPhone5s. All i have left to say to Apple is this - you are not invicible, be careful!

Apple never has from the very beginning of the iOS and iPhone, and they never will. It's only an "injustice" in your own mind and it's definitely not to the overwhelming and vast majority of the installed user base. You're the one who is "out of alignment" with that idea!

I ask again, who are you? You must be an Apple person or are you the monitor/moderator of this particular site. I find that several of your last few posts are rude to some of the people who have posted here and you should stop. People here have real problems with their updated iPad 2. All we want is for Apple to acknowledge and fix all the problems they created with the iOS 8 software and the iPad 2.

I know quite a few people who have an iPad 2 and have updated to iOS 8. They have not posted on this website but they too are having problems with the iPad 2. The problems people are posting here are not isolated incidents, limited to just a few. These are problems everybody with an iPad 2 are having. I am advising the rest of my friends who have iPad 2s not to update to iOS 8. I have one friend who did not heed my advice, she updated the iPad two weeks ago and she is crying because she has had nothing but problems. She took her iPad to the Apple Store and to Verizon and neither one could fix the issue. They did not find any hardware problems with her iPad. Verizon had the nerve to offer her $100 if she upgraded to the newest iPad. She does not post to this discussion board and I am not sure if my friends know it exist.

It is frustrating when you have a piece of equipment that was perfect but now is barely functional. It freezes all of the time, I cannot copy and paste properly, I cannot search the web properly, I cannot delete apps properly, there are multiple things I cannot do that I used to be able to do on my iPad. I have performed all of the fixes mentioned on the site and nothing has made my iPad run as it supposed too. I too would leave Apple for a different product but unfortunately I invested a lot of money into Apple and it would not be cost-effective for me to leave.

I know you previously posted people who are not having problems with their iPad 2 or have had problems fixed but I'm not sure I believe that those are valid people or there is really a fix for the iOS software problem right now. You can repeat your Apple propaganda all you want but that does not fix the problems.

If some of my words are repeats from a previous post it is only because it has to be said it has to be understood no matter what you say, there are problems with the iPad 2 and iOS 8 software.

AND I'll be saying "again" ... a user of Apple products who posts on a tech support forum for "users helping other users".

You must be an Apple person or are you the monitor/moderator of this particular site. I does not fix the problems.

Apple hires moderators for for this forum in order to keep it as a "users helping other users" tech support forum where one user posts a problem, and another user posts a solution that the first user can implement themselves.

Moderators don't engage in discussions here and I'm not a moderator. When you allow your "conspiracy theories" take over in your head, you lose all rational thought ... :-) ...

I know you previously posted people who are not having problems with their iPad 2 or have had problems fixed but I'm not sure I believe that those are valid people or there is really a fix for the iOS software problem right now.

Those were people who were both long-term posters and new posters. I keep getting replies from people thanking me for solutions that helped them. And once again, if you start going down the "conspiracy road" you lose all rationality ... :-) ...

You can repeat your Apple propaganda all you want but that does not fix the problems.

The solutions that others have acted on from me have resulted in fixing problems. That's how I've gotten those points ... namely from other users on this forum who have thanked me for these solutions that have helped them. The points come from users here, not Apple.

I wasn't thinking about conspiracy but now it is in my thoughts, thank you. My thought was that Apple was just trying to stay ahead of their competition but they made big a mistake. They were quick to a release this update an update that is not compatible with all the products.

The way I understand it Apples iPad 2 was one of their most popular seller. They even sold it to schools for educational purposes. Now that conspiracies is truly in my thoughts I wonder what was Apples real plan, trying to get everybody with an iPad 2 to buy the newer one?

You're the one who is insulting by saying that I am an Apple Rep, when you get the clear statement from me that I'm not.

And you're insulting all the other users in a forum that is for "users helping other users" in implementing solutions on their own devices ... when you have nothing to do with the "solutions that one can implement themselves" ... but instead supply a personal rant of yours here on this forum.

It was an option for awhile and they had a special link that went right to it. They decided to take that away though and I am very lucky that I did not upgrade. But this is not just on ipad 2 ( granted we are on the edge) but even other much faster ipads are experiencing great lapse in performance and the ability to do what they were before 8. I am part of a music community that is very active and especially concerned with the direction this upgrade takes. SO far it has not been a pleasant one. As for the origin of "Star Traveler" it is definitely not a positive or honest place. It was quite some time ago that I was trying to get answers on this subject. I am very glad I was not mislead by your malice. I would have a brick most likely. At this point from the notifications I get the feeling you just want to make an isolated reality and sell it to others as non-fictional. The problem is not solved and for those that have to stop production it is costing them money every day they can not get results. Yes! if they could simply roll back their ios to 7.1.2 then they could at least keep working. Quite a dilemma.

What was an option?

It's the same place you came from, a user of iPads ...

It was quite some time ago that I was trying to get answers on this subject. I am very glad I was not mislead by your malice. I would have a brick most likely.

You're not getting "malice" or something that will brick your device from Apple Support documents ... LOL ...

Here is what I just posted today, to give you an example .

Follow this procedure for a Troubleshooting Methodology ... basically reset to factory default condition -BUT- be sure to do the following methodically and also to follow the part with Apple Support!

First you want to make sure you have several backups of your data and done with a couple of "different" sources. Be sure to understand what data is backed up and what is NOT on iCloud Backup and iTunes Backup. Use a variety of methods for backup ... you might check into Dropbox, in addition to your Apple options.

Then turn off your desktop anti-virus software when using iTunes for this reset to factory default. After you do that reset, then leave your iPad in its factory default state and see how it operates then. If you encounter any problems in that factory default state, then take it to Apple Support, and let them know that you have just reset it to that state with iTunes and have not put any of your data back on and it is operating in this fashion (whatever the problem is) in that pristine state. Make sure you keep that trouble ticket number, because if it has to be escalated through Apple Support, you're going to find all communications tied in with that number. If the lower level help isn't able to help you, then escalate it to a higher level to examine the problem. Keep at it with that trouble ticket number until Apple Support arrives at a solution to that problem. Be methodical and keep at it.

On the other hand, if everything is okay with the factory default condition, then restore your backup. Some people have discovered that the problem resides in the apps or something in the restored backup. If that's the case, then it's going to be trying and difficult to find out which developer's app is causing you the problem. And ... it's true ... that a developer not following Apple's instructions and guidelines for his app can CAUSE YOU TROUBLE. This kind of thing does happen from developers, especially when a new system upgrade comes out, because some developers ignore what Apple tells them about changes coming, and what they do BREAKS SOMETHING.

This is a troubleshooting methodology that you are going through. See it through to the end.

Talking to Star Traveler does not solve a problem. It does feed the individuals narcissism. It is too bad when a forumn gets over run by this sort in the process of trying to find resolution. Mostly has invalidated himself. As a new and originally impressed user to ios I am not so impressed with the tolerance of said individual ranting at everyone like a whiny child with a soiled diaper. It only puts insult in to injury. ( reading this absolute useless star traveler gibberish) Indeed a sickness. Get help..real help.
