Will an iPad 2 be upgradable to iOS 8?

I have an iPad first gen that only was upgradable to iOS 5.11. I am thinking about getting a refurbished 2nd Gen. Will that be upgradable to iOS 8 when it comes out this Fall, or should I look for a newer refurb gen like a 3rd or Air?

iPad, iOS 5.1.1

I do agree that a word of caution from Apple would be a good idea. Older devices often do not have the hardware to keep up with the latest and greatest. I also suspect that the individual's device configuration and the particular Apps they run add to the issue. My best advice--when in doubt wait, and check the forums for problems before upgrading. Your iPad will continue to run just as it always has and maybe we will see fewer of these threads on the forum. I do think Apple should warn that new updates may not be successful on all older devices. This from someone who still runs IOS 6 on her iPad 2 and successfully upgraded her iPad Air.

Bonjour,

can van you tell me if anyone receive any news from Apple service? I tried to communicate with them without any success. I upgraded my IPad 2 with the IOS 8.02 and i have still have fees problems. In term of service forget the name of Apple because they are not there. A lot of discussions but no solution. I was ready to buy the new IPhone 6 but not anymore.Any smartphone will be better.

Agree...it would be nice however if Apple would NOT have the new iOS show up in "Settings" for "Software Update" with an alert if the software update won't work with that unit! This feels like a half-baked scheme to force the purchase of a new tablet, and if I end up needing one, I can tell you that after purchasing quite a few Apple products, there will be no more. I will NOT buy Apple again! Right now it seems that everything is focused on iPhone 6 (and now the new iPad coming) and the **** with the older products. THAT is not customer service - just the opposite. I just wish Apple would allow us to return to 7.12.

Don't do it!!!!. I updated my husbands ipad 2 with ios 8 and now his programs crash, my camera wont work in my software. Everything is sluggish. USELESS, I called apple and they had me do a complete restore as a new ipad and download the programs from scratch. everything is still crashing and they told me I have a hardware problem, they could try to repair it or I just needed to purchase a new ipad. Why didnt apple just tell people with a ipad 2 they cant update to ios 8 instead of killing a working ipad. I have purchased alot of apple products since they started, ipad, ipad min, macbook pro, desktop, iphone, ipod nano, ipod to name a few. But I think I am done purchasing apple products after this. I feel ripped off.

I would almost sell my soul to undo this terrible update! My iPad 2 is almost dead!

I'm so unhappy! All I want is a downgrade.

What have you tried to resolve these issues?

Try these basic troubleshooting steps:

1. Reset the iPad. Hold down the home and power/sleep buttons until the Apple Logo shows up.

If this does not solve the issues:

2. Reset Settings. Settings->General->Reset->Reset all Settings. The iPad Should reboot.

If this still does not fix the issues

3. Restore the iPad to Factory Condition. This should refresh the iOS installation and is known to clear out many bugs and glitches.

Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings
