Will an iPad 2 be upgradable to iOS 8?

I have an iPad first gen that only was upgradable to iOS 5.11. I am thinking about getting a refurbished 2nd Gen. Will that be upgradable to iOS 8 when it comes out this Fall, or should I look for a newer refurb gen like a 3rd or Air?

iPad, iOS 5.1.1

If you want to address the issue with "Apple" (as you addressed Apple in your post), then you'll have to go here ...

If you would like to address "users helping other users" ... then this is the right place. I would suggest doing a backup first. Then I would reset it to the factory default condition and not reload your data just yet. Try it out there and see how it operates. You might possibly have a hardware problem. This should show you how it operates as a "fresh" and "new" device from Apple.

And ... Apple is still selling iPad 2 on its online store site, so they are still viable devices and can run iOS 8.

I'm looking for help from users who had the same experience. I had already contacted Apple before. The guy was very nice and told me to reset my iPad and set it up as a new, which I did. Right after this new installation I only put my pictures on it and it still took me 5-10 seconds to get startetd. After that I only installed the Apps I really need. I like to have a new installation, but it didn't help me with my problem.

This is my first experience with Apple. I wasn't sure if I really want to make this update, but everybody says Apple is so cool ;-)

I just wish I could decide which OS I want to use on my stuff.

Apple has always had the policy of not going backwards in the iOS for these devices, and I've been here in the iOS environment since Day One. The problem is that you'll have a developer program and file structures that will change from system to system and also Apple's programs. Now, I've already read where people have updated and have (unofficially) gone backwards only to find out that they now have trouble with some developer programs who have updated. And, by the way, that unofficial way to downgrade for the iOS will not work now ... because Apple quit "signing" the iOS 7.1.2.

Here's an example - this time - of Apple making a change to an app ... the iPhoto App. Things have been changed there on this new iOS 8, and going back wouldn't work for that app. In fact, I don't know if the file structure has been destroyed there, revamped or what, but once you make the transition ... there is something that happens there.

It would be a nightmare for users and Apple to "mix and match" apps with varying operating systems with apps being at one level and the iOS being at another level and so on.

No, for keeping the bulk and overwhelming majority of the installed user base consistent and operating properly, this is the best way to do it.

Apple is eliminating duplicate functionality ... which I did wonder before why there was duplicate functionality in some of Apple's apps. They are rolling it into one app and not two apps. It's nothing more than making it concise and being together in one spot. The very same thing, by the way, happens with developer apps, too, in case you didn't know. I have apps that are either no longer being updated or they have been pulled. In those cases with other developers, I can't say what their reasons are ... but in this case with Apple, it was very obvious to me that Apple had duplicate functionality in two of their apps and that just plainly didn't make any sense. Rolling it into one app makes more sense to me.

And, by the way, I also purchased that program, but it's no big deal to me because I realize that this industry is ALWAYS in transition, and NEVER stays the same. I've seen so many changes since the very first iPhone (which I got on Day One) and it's all been for the good, in the overall picture. This will be the same, as Apple has moved this industry forward like no other company has.

In addition to the above and a little off topic to this thread, Apple has done the same for other programs on the desktop versions, too. Again, you'll NEVER have a static and unchanging market for either the desktops or the iOS devices. I'm glad Apple makes these changes because they've always moved the market in a better direction.

Looking at both apps in front of me now I suppose it's a matter of opinion whether the functionality available on the iPhotos app (which people paid for)on iOS7 is duplicated on the Photos app on iOS8.

It's not exactly duplicate in all facets of its operation, but it's duplicate in that there is overlap. If you have two apps, dealing with the same thing (Photos and iPhoto ... dealing with your photo library), then it makes sense to eliminate one of them and roll it into just one app. It conserves resources and time and programming. It's better in the long run for users.

Just to let you know (but you may already know this) ... this forum is only "users helping other users" and we have nothing to do with Apple. These are just personal experiences and none of our experiences should be attributed to Apple, the company. Apple does not participate or involve itself in these forums. If you want Apple Support you really need to go to them - as we don't know how everything works in the iOS devices and we don't have the tools to check out the operation of your iPad. Apple does ... on the other hand and they have trained personnel to give customers support.

Now, I only say this -- when -- a person says that they've done all they can here. A customer doesn't really have to come here, and this is only for those customers who "like" to deal with issues this way - on forums and with other users. The mass of the installed base of customers will always go to Apple Support. And since in your case, you say that nothing has helped ... you're an obvious candidate for Apple Support help.

If you have something that you want to SHOW someone in person, I would sugges the Genius Bar at Apple. I've always had good luck there. They'll tell you what needs to be done.

You can buy any app on the Apple Store one day ... and next week or next month it can be deleted, and you will not get your money back. That's the way it's always been. You can buy an app that is full price one day, and then a few days later, you can see it for $0 ... and you will not get a refund.

This has always been the way it's been. It's nothing new since the beginning of the store and the iOS for our devices. It sounds like you're complaining about Apple policy and that's not part of what we do here on the forum of "users helping other users" solve their technical issues and problems.

If you want to give Apple "feedback" ... I would try here, as this forum is not for feedback ...
