Bluetooth and Mac Pro problem

Hi all,

Long time lurker, first time poster...anyhow, I just recently received my Mac Pro and I'm having some issues with my mice. First, my wireless bluetooth mighty mouse (purchased earlier) has unbelievably poor range now. My Mac Pro is about 2.5 to 3 feet from my desktop and I literally have to move the mouse all the way to the left-side edge of the desk (closer to the tower) to prevent the mouse from acting erratically. I'm not a lefty, so this makes it all the worse. When I bring the mouse close to the tower, apparently all is well.

Second problem is with my included, wired Mighty Mouse which is just acting oddly. The cursor dances all over the place. I have tried resetting the machine, reinstalling drivers...all to no avail. The thing just keeps moving with a mind of its own. Anyone else having similar problems with either Bluetooth range or wired mouse issues?

Thanks 🙂

Someone else on the MacRumors discussion tried this and it worked for them too. Nice find! It appears that, if the wires were properly labelled, they would get set up as follows:
BT: disconnected
1: to bluetooth module
2: upper airport connector
3: lower airport connector.
I'd love to know if this works for anybody else before I call the Apple Tech back here to reinstall the internal bluetooth module in my MacPro. I'm using a usb bluetooth adapter plugged into the back of my Cinema Display. It works fine, but I'd sure like to free up that usb port and use the internal BT module that I paid for!

All four of these thin black wires are "tucked" behind the motherboard. They emerge from behind the motherboard just above, and very close to, the bluetooth and Airport modules. If they are not visible, try sliding a finger behind the motherboard to find them. If it's hard to find it's probably because the wire has just fallen further behind the motherboard. Where there are three wires there should be the fourth.

I was really hoping switching these antennas around would not only solve my BlueTooth issues but also take care of the 'crackling' noise I'm getting through my sound outputs....my BlueToothe is working great, but the noise is still there unfortunately.

I would be interested to know if anyone else is having these 'crackling' noises. It's audible even when I mute or sleep my Mac. Basically, if you want to see if you have the noise, put your Mac to sleep, turn up your volume on your amplifier and listen...heh.

Take care...

After reading a number of similar discussions here
and elsewhere, I was prompted to more closely examine
the antenna leads in my box. There are supposed to be
four leads, labeled 1, 2, 3, and 'BT'. In my box, 2
and 3 were the only ones clearly labeled; an unlabled
one was attached to the bluetooth module, 3 was
attached to the lower Airport connector, another
unlabeled one was attached to the upper Airport
connector, and 2 was unconnected (tucked behind the
motherboard). I disconnected the unlabeled lead that
was connected to the Airport and moved it to the
bluetooth module, leaving the lead formerly connected
to bluetooth disconnected. I then attached lead 2 to
the open Airport connector (this lead was
significantly shorter than the others, and only just
reached the upper Airport connector). The difference
is dramatic; Airport works as well as before, but
bluetooth now works as it should. Before, moving my
mouse more than 3ft. from the box made it difficult
to move; past 4-5ft. it became practically unusable.
Now I can use the mouse effectively from across the
room. It appears to me that the antenna leads were
mislabled or misconnected. (Note: the antenna wires
are supposed to run behind the motherboard to a
plastic area on the underside of the box where the
signal can escape the otherwise aluminum case). I
hope this info may be of use to some of you
experiencing similar problems.

Great find! It's worked for everybody who's tried it. Thanks!

are these bluetooth problems at all related to the right-clicking issues many users (myself included) have reported on the wireless mighty mouse? right-clicking is a burden, a hard task to accomplish. sometimes you have to completely remove your hand from the mouse and use a stick to poke on the right side of the mouse, and only then it will work. bug or feature?

I just checked and re allotted the antenna leads on my MacPro. My original antenna layout WAS as follows: 1: Upper Airport, 3: lower Airport, Unmarked: BT and 2 was unattached however the end of the lead had a plastic tube on it. Now my antenna layout is as follows; Unmarked is now unattached, covered with the plastic tube that was on 2. 1 is on the BT module, 2 is on the upper Airport and 3 is on the lower Airport. Everything is working great so far, my BT MM is tracking smoothly. and My keyboard, as always is fine. I'll see how it all goes.

I can confirm that this works for me too.

I got a call from a technician who was planning to come tomorrow to replace the BT module. I live in rural France, and AppleCare here is on-site; the guy would have had to drive about 5 hours round-trip to come and do the job.

So I pointed him to this thread, and told him I would be happy to try and make the change, if he agreed (so my guarantee wouldn't be voided). He walked me through it, explaining where the cables are (they aren't that easy to see, at least if you don't have AirPort, which I don't - those cables aren't connected). I made the change, rebooted, turned on the wireless MM and it works fine.

We're still going to wait a few days to see if anything happens - at first, it was working ok, but after a day or two started having tracking problems.

To sum up, somehow Apple's assemblers have inverted the labelling of two of the cables, the BT one and the one that is unlabeled. This is a serious problem, not so much because of usability, but because of what this foolish mistake is costing them. Some people have said that Apple exchanged their Mac Pros, others that they changed the BT module and/or antenna. The fix is simply one of correcting human error.
