Bluetooth and Mac Pro problem

Hi all,

Long time lurker, first time poster...anyhow, I just recently received my Mac Pro and I'm having some issues with my mice. First, my wireless bluetooth mighty mouse (purchased earlier) has unbelievably poor range now. My Mac Pro is about 2.5 to 3 feet from my desktop and I literally have to move the mouse all the way to the left-side edge of the desk (closer to the tower) to prevent the mouse from acting erratically. I'm not a lefty, so this makes it all the worse. When I bring the mouse close to the tower, apparently all is well.

Second problem is with my included, wired Mighty Mouse which is just acting oddly. The cursor dances all over the place. I have tried resetting the machine, reinstalling drivers...all to no avail. The thing just keeps moving with a mind of its own. Anyone else having similar problems with either Bluetooth range or wired mouse issues?

Thanks 🙂

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.7)

SOLUTION (for me and a few others):

I originally made the sketchy diagram quite a few posts earlier. Once I realized people were still having issues with this, I decided to make a nice pdf that was intended to be printed out during the whole procedure that worked for me, and quite a few other people.

http://www.thelocale.org/files/howtos/mac-pro-bluetooth-howto.pdf

It's a 5.7mb pdf with very detailed vector lines, and detailed labeled photos of my Mac Pro, along with written instructions, links, and general information. I hope this is of use to everyone. Let me know.

Got my mac pro yesterday, same issue. Followed pdf and bluetooth now works fine. Its a dilema, you've got all this new kit out and want it working - do you send it back / call for a technician or do you have a go yourself? I'm pretty comfortable with opening up machines, it was a little fiddly but no real problem. I had the airport bto option so I appreciate I may have reduced the capability of that (if some people's views are considered), but that was only a 'just in case' option and the pro is hard wired ot the net. I do seem to have pretty good wireless connection though, seeing most my neighbours networks

Some clear guidance from apple would be appreciated

I had my G5 replaced with a Mac Pro under Apple Care (liquid cooling failure) just before Christmas and sadly discovered that it suffered from this issue with Bluetooth affecting the operation of the mighty mouse.

I returned it to my local AppleStore where the Mac Genii investigated the issue for 2 weeks. They tried a new aerial in various positions within the casing, but found that they cured the problem by replacing the Bluetooth card itself. I've had the machine on test now for 2 weeks and so far (touch wood) it works as well as my G5 did.

I should add that I also have Airport fitted, and that seems to be working fine too (getting a connection rate of 300)

I bought a Mac Pro about a year ago, and then installed a BT module myself, attaching the BT wire. Bluetooth mouse has always been choppy and keyboard missed strokes, or would occasionally "stick" on a character. I just opened my MP today to install another HDD, and thought I'd try switching the wires. WOW! Amazing difference. Thanks everybody.

I think it's an easy enough fix for anyone willing to open it up. I've heard if you take it in, they'll hold it for a while and maybe even try to send it in for service. I'd try it yourself first, and then if you want to take it in, print out some documentation (like this forum page) and ask them to just try it.

Thanks! This definitely worked, just wanted to add to the confirmation stories!

I've used both the Wireless Mighty Mouse and the Wired Mighty Mouse. I always hated using the wireless mouse with the Mac Pro because of the annoying lag when using it. I noticed that while the wireless Mighty Mouse would lag with my Mac Pro that it would work without any lag at all when using a Macbook. I always suspected that the problem was related to the Mac Pro's bluetooth.

I had 4 wires in my Mac Pro and they were labeled BT, 1, 2 and 3. I installed the bluetooth module myself and the instructions said to use the wire labeled BT.

After switching the bluetooth chipset to use the wire labeled 1 the lag has disappeared. The wireless Mighty Mouse now works great!

I did trace the wires and it looks like the wire labeled BT goes behind the motherboard while the wires labeled 1,2 & 3 are running towards the front and to the bottom to the rubber antenna area under the Mac Pro.

I have the 2007 Mac Pro.

Swapped the cables ... and hey presto .. BT works properly for the first time ... and in addition I finally get decent Airport reception.

Had also been having issues with iTunes streaming cutting out ... which is also now magically cured. No doubt due to Airport reception.

Come on Apple .. this is rubbish shipping MacPros with the cables the wrong way round! ... and to apparently not even know about it (I spent ages on the phone to support trying to fix the Airport side of the problems I was having).

Thank god for the forums.

Just purchased a wireless MM and had the same problems... took it back to the Apple store and exchanged it. Obviously thought something was wrong with the mouse. Second time around same thing. Tried it on my MBP and no problem at all. A quick search of the forum and found this thread. Tried the MM close to the the Mac Pro (right next to it, actually) and you could see the difference. My Mac Pro is approx 5-6 feet (on the floor) near my desk. I tried Rectangular solution. Nice diagram, BTW. Works perfectly now. Wasn't the easiest to do with my big fingers but not hard either. Just took a little finesse. Airport card works perfectly too.

Thanks, Rectangular!

Regards,

Tom

This is an awesome find and seriously should be a tech notes bulletin. If not, at least it should be something all Geniuses @ Apple stores should know.

I was having problems recently with my bluetooth where my keyboard would disconnect randomly. I honestly believe that it was either a software issue after having upgraded to 10.5.5 or a hardware issue because I increased my RAM from 6GB to 12GB (removing 4x512MB DIMMs and adding 4x2GB DIMMs). I decided to try this out (what the heck, I had nothing to lose, right?) and I haven't had a disconnect since.
