Spinning wheel of death is killing me. Have some info that might help.

Started occurring about a week ago. It happens whether I am running several applications or just surfing internet. Seems to get progressively worse the longer I have computer on. I usually eventually have to power off. Happens regardless of which user is logged on. Started in safe mode and no difference. Ran the disk utility and Repair Disk and everything was OK. I have included the Etrecheck below. Yesterday, I got pop-up warnings that said "Your system has run out of Application Memory". I'm still relatively new to Macs, so I would appreciate any help anyone can share. Thanks!

I can tell you where one part of it is.

Back up all data.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/Dashlane.plugin

Right-click or control-click the line and select

Services Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)

from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Quit Safari if it's running. Move the selected item to the Trash.

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select

Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

Should Active Memory be such a high percentage of physical memory? 3.75/4.0 GB?

Yes. That doesn't mean anything. As I wrote earlier, a memory leak is not easy to track down. When you get the warning about running out of application memory, at least one process will be using a disproportionate amount of memory. You must be sure that you're looking at All Processes in the Activity Monitor window, not My Processes.

As for the beachballs, that may be a separate issue. Follow the instructions on the support page linked below.

Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

Jun 8, 2014 6:46 AM in response to Linc Davis

Well, looking at All Processes, not seeing anything obvious there. Followed the SMC reset instructions for MacBook Pro. I pushed and released shift, control, option and power all at the same time, then powered on. No obvious sign that anything was happening in terms of a reset. Not sure if I should have seen any indicator. Also didn't seem to make any difference in performance. Tried it several times, sometimes holding all 4 keys down instantaneously, sometimes holding down for 5 seconds or more, before releasing simultaneously. Nothing seemed to be occurring. Not sure if I'm running out of options here.

Back up all data to at least two different storage devices, if you haven't already done so. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

Erase and install OS X. This operation will destroy all data on the startup volume, so you had be better be sure of your backups. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.

If you use FileVault 2, then in Disk Utility select the icon of the FileVault volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted.

When you restart the computer, the Setup Assistant will launch to take you through the initial setup process. Follow the prompt to transfer the data from one of your backups. Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled on the old system.

If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode.
