Spinning wheel of death is killing me. Have some info that might help.

Started occurring about a week ago. It happens whether I am running several applications or just surfing internet. Seems to get progressively worse the longer I have computer on. I usually eventually have to power off. Happens regardless of which user is logged on. Started in safe mode and no difference. Ran the disk utility and Repair Disk and everything was OK. I have included the Etrecheck below. Yesterday, I got pop-up warnings that said "Your system has run out of Application Memory". I'm still relatively new to Macs, so I would appreciate any help anyone can share. Thanks!

OK, I got th external drive, baked everything up using Time Machine and external drive. I erased and reinstalled Mavericks. Using Setup Assistant, it asked me if I want to transfer information to this Mac. I said yes, and my external drive is still attached. I then just get a spinning icon with the message "looking for source". Not sure what to do.

I can see the disk in Finder.

Most likely, some folders were excluded from the backups as the result of a failed or aborted software installation.

Starting from a clean installation of OS X, set up a new administrator account and log in. Enter Time Machine and press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible.* Select the one you want and navigate to your home folder (in the Users folder at the top level of the old startup volume.)

You should now be able to restore your user data. I suggest you do this in two stages. Quit all applications except the Finder before you begin.
  1. Restore all the visible items at the top level of the home folder.
  2. Hold down the option key and select Go Library from the Finder menu bar. Enter Time Machine and restore all items in the Library folder. Log out and log back in as soon as the restore is complete.
Any other invisible folders or files at the top level of the home folder that you want to preserve will have to be restored separately. For most users, that isn't necessary.

You'll have to reinstall all third-party applications from scratch, or restore them from another kind of backup, if you have one.

You'll have another problem if this is a new computer, or if you erased the startup volume: The next time you back up, Time Machine won't recognize any files as being the same as they were before, and will make a full copy of all files. There might not be enough space on one or more of the backup volumes for that. There are different ways of dealing with that situation, depending on your needs. The easiest way is to set the backup drives aside, if possible, until you're sure you'll no longer need the data on them, then erase them and start over. Meanwhile start a new backup on one or more empty storage devices. If that solution isn't workable for you, ask for instructions.

*If you don't see any snapshots in Time Machine, exit the time-travel view and then hold down the option key while selecting

Browse Other Backup Disks...

from the Time Machine menu, which has an icon that looks like a clock running backwards. Select the backups of the computer by its previous name. If you don't have the Time Machine menu, open the Time Machine preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked

Show Time Machine in menu bar

I started experiencing exactly the same problem last week. I also have Dashlane installed and since the last Safari update my MacBook has been running very slowly and getting very hot. Took it into my local Apple store and they seem to have identified the Dashlane extension even though I have been using it for some months. The activity monitor shows 7.90 Of the RAM in use but this is dramatically reduced when Dashlane is not running. I am going to uninstall it and run the machine for a couple of days to see if this is the problem.

Sorry, I had not had a chance to try this until yesterday. I attempted this, but I must confess I became confused pretty quickly. I am somewhat of a beginner on Mac and have not even used Timemachine before. I did a new clean install of OSX. This time I bypassed setup Assistant, and as you suggested, I setup a new administrator account and logged in. I opened time machine, and did a shift-command-c to get a window that showed both my hard drive and my external drive. From there, I was sort of lost. I wasn't sure how to follow your steps after that. Is there a more descriptive explanation of the next steps. I wasn't sure what I was looking for with regard to snapshots, nor was I sure about "selecting and navigating to a home folder." Sorry again for my inexperience. Just wondering if you can dumb it down for me. Thanks.

I Have now resolved my issue with the "beach ball" I ran the machine for a couple if days with Dashlabe disabled from my Safari extensions; everything was back to normal so I was resigned to de-installing and re-installing it but accidentally re-enabled the extension. Lo and behold everything is running normally so considering that well known adage, "If it ain't broke don't fix it" I'm moving forward and still using Dashlane.

I'm more and more confused by my issues. I get the spinning wheel intermittently and quite frequently when I am using an app that interacts live with other people online. Never had the issue prior to about 5 or 6 weeks ago. Meanwhile, I had to travel for a few days and had no issue at all with these apps while connected to the hotel Wifi. Kids play interactive games online in the house with other devices and have no problems. Netflix and other things work fine streaming on other devices. I seem to be able to watch Youtube videos on my Mac without issue. Ran the speedtest and the numbers look good. The beachball will show up briefly even in something like Finder, but really becomes problematic with these interactive apps. This is happening even with the Mac after the clean install, even before I have gotten to restore all of my old stuff.
