Itunes Can't Find correct CDR drive?

iTunes CD burning problem: iTunes cannot distinguish between internal and ext CDR drives. On atrtempting a Burn, IT says it cannot find my "preferred" CDR drives, and is it OK to use the internal CDR drive. The only place I know to sort of select a CDR drives is in SysPref/CD drives. I have never selected the ext CDR drive as my "preferred" drive so far as I know. Drive is a LaCie CDR/RW Firewire drive.

iMac G4 20 1.25; all latest Apple software, Mac OS X (10.4.7), 3 large ext HDDs (LaCie)/2 on FW 400; 1 on USB 2

If you have more than 1 burner connected, you can choose between them at 'CD Burner:' in Preferences>Advanced>Burning.
iTunes obviously designates the last used drive as the preferred burner.
If it can't find it, it will ask if it is OK to use another one.

if you connect the external and iTunes still can't find it, run Terminal (in Applications/Utilities).
In the Terminal window type: drutil info
What does it say?
If your ext drive is recognized , but it says 'unsupported', you may need to install a profile with PatchBurn (www.patchburn.de).

Hope this helps.
