Another slow MacBook Pro. PLEASE HELP.

I have a Macbook pro 2010. It is slow.

I did an Etrecheck and pasted something that was in another forum into my Terminal.

This one is easy.

Launching Sophos

Open the Preferences

Click on the padlock and use your admin password to unlock it.

In the On Access pane click the "Stop Scanning" button.

In Web Protection pane, General tab, turn both protections "OFF"

If that takes care of it you should re-evaluate whether you need this type of protection or not. Slowdowns is the price you pay.

I see you are using uTorrent, which may be why you think you need additional A-V protection. Most of the BitTorrent world is run by cyber-criminals, so it's best to just stay out of it and not expose yourself to that threat.

I can't comment on the results of that Terminal command as I have no idea what it's suppose to reveal.

- You seem to have need for more Ram.

- There is software that should not be there and must be uninstalled.

- But let us first ask to make a screen grab of the battery info: start SystemInformation (in Utilities), click "Power" in the left panel, and make a screen tab of the information after 'Charge Information:' and after Health Information:'

- then in DiskUtility (in Utilities) do 'verify disk ' on the startdisk: what does it find?

- Uninstall the Sophos software.

Uninstall WesternDigital software (if still there).

Uninstall uTorrent and do not use it anymore (it broadcasts information about you and your mac).

Uninstall Steam (valvesoftware), you can reinstall the latest version if you really can not do without it. Take it out of the SystemPrefences->Users&Groups->LoginItems tab (with the minus sign underneath).

Take the NiHardwareAgent out og the LoginItems too.

Uninstall Chrome (unsecure and leaky), if you do not want to use Safari, take Firefox or Opera as fast browser.

-Restart

- Post the answers. Use the mac for a day or so and post a new etrecheck list.

That one is actually part of OS X that Apple installs since it uses WD drives in some Macs (including my iMac). The OP's fails because the boot drive is a Seagate. Admittedly it isn't needed, but will be replaced by the next OS X update and may be needed if the OP ever uses a WD drive in the future.

The disk verification result stated 'The volume untitled appears to be ok'

Should i do a disk permissions check?

So the disk seems OK, the battery still OK, but "aged".

Issues maybe caused by some software now removed. Maybe you run a while (say a day) with the software you normally use, and then make a etrecheck list again.

@Mad: this mac is without wd disk so it may go: not all the cleaning is really necessary, but I would like to have gone also software that, although not really bad, does not contribute something.

@madmacs: I was not critisizing. I could not see whether WD software was installed and uninstalled, or whether there only was the helper file. Thus I said uninstall WD software (If still there). The helper file is harmless I said, but it may go.

Waiting for the new list to see how the page-outs figure is now. Ram may be needed.

p.s. i thought i uninstalled sophos.. but it still shows in the top menu bar alongside the battery status and the airport thing.
It also seems to show in the etrecheck?
