My mac won't connect to the internet without a ethernet cable please HELP!!!!

My mac won't connect to the internet without a enthernet cable and when I go to Network Prefrences and go to airport and try to connect that way it dosen't connect and it says: AirPort 2 has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.201.215 and will not be able to connect to the Internet. PLEASE HELP

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

That's probably because any wireless you have nearby isn't functioning properly or on the same protocol as the MacBook Pro. 2006 MacBook Pros if Core2Duo required a special 802.11n patch from Apple to connect to 802.11n networks. The CoreDuo model could only connect to 802.11g networks, and the insecure 802.11b networks. Your network should at minimum have 802.11g and WPA2 encryption, and you should check your router is properly configured to share with the number of machines it is sharing the internet with.
