printing on an older Sharp copier

I got hold of a nice Sharp hi-speed printer/copier (MX7000N) with a finisher. It should let me print my newsletter - 11x17, folded & stapled - but I just can't get it right. Now the copier guys are telling me that I can't use a Mac to make it print that way. They say that it needs a PCL driver and Macs only use PPD.

I am printing a high-res PDF from Reader or Acrobat, and the best I can get is the image centered but about half as big as it should be.

Anyone have any ideas? I can print most stuff just fine. The printer has PS installed.

I'm sure you realize these two statements are contradictory. Macs and the CUPS printing system used in Macs, and in all linux versions, use the PPD file to define some parameters of the printer. So, what used to be "postscript printer description" files, are now just universal printer descriptions files. OS X has PCL drivers available, too.

So, are you using a PPD file specifically for that printer?

If the printer has postscript installed, try the "generic postscript" driver to test it.
