My power adapter shows a red light when plugged in, as if it is charging my computer. But my computer doesn't actually charge.

My power adapter shows a red light when plugged in, as if it is charging my computer. But my computer doesn't actually charge. Is this most likely an adapter or computer issue? It's a 2009 MacBook Pro.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.1)

Try a SMC reset:

Follow directions for a battery you should not remove yourself, or a battery you can remove (you are right on the change time)

It may also be the battery has given up the ghost.

Go to the Apple menu, hold the option key and select system info, select power from the left sidebar and see what the battery info says as it is 5 years old, it may ned to be replaced. Check charging staus, as well as health.

If a battery you should not remove, make an Apple store Genius bar appointment and have it checked out for FREE, they will then tell you your options.
