Internet connection slow only on Mac Pro

I have a Linksys cable modem model befcmu1 and my service is pretty slow at times. I spoke with my ISP and they stated I was getting 6mps. They tested my modem and it point to my computer. My old compaq computer works find. It is faster than this computer when it comes to the internet. Then I used fox then things change a little until I read negative about fox since returning to safari. Would be nice if they could fix this if it is the program.

I had the same symptoms as all of you when I first connected my MP. Consulted with the technical type at my ISP and he basically reset my cable modem and all was cured. Not an Apple problem. He said that the modem sometimes get confused when changing computers. Suggest you powerdown/unplug everything and do a cold start.

I completely quit Safari for now. Been using Firefox and it is better

it isnt only safari - doing a connection via timbuktu appeared incredibly slow - in fact unworkable.

hopefully its only a software or firmware fix thats needed. but i doubt it.

i got some emails from someone who is an apple dealer and was finding that many of the mac pros being delivered had the airport aerial cables incorrectly fitted. dont know what we can do about this though without violating warranties..

I'm getting pretty frustrated about this! Called Apple and they responded, "wow, that's the first time I heard this. Can't find any other logs about this either. We will certainly look into it!". But when????!? If i'm the "first one", they certainly won't waste developer resources to get it fixed.

APPLE! Help! Your product doesn't work and it isn't just me!

I had to use Safari to download Windows Vista 3.6GB, was the ONLY browser that would resume and let me complete the transfer successfully. Yesterday I downloaded the smaller 32-bit version and even if it dropped after 1GB and sat for half an hour, would resume successfully.

Some cable modems are/were very slow on PPC Macs and even though it is "known" issue, no one (MOTO, Apple etc) know 'why.' This seems to be similar only affecting wireless connections.

Just so that no one gets confused: This has nothing to do with Safari, Firefox or any other browser/client software. The problem is in OS X itself (driver/firmware). The connection is slow for every application in OS X. Also, the fact that the Mac Pro almost "dies" for 3-4 seconds when clicking on the Airport-icon in the menubar (to view available networks) also proves this.

It is not a router issue! I have tried 3 different routers (3com, d-link and netgear).

Is has nothing to do with the wireless settings (have tried everything, no encryption, WEP, WPA, DCHP/STATIC.. everything). Same problem.

This is definitely a driver/firmware issue on the Mac Pro! And Apple need to start seeing this issue and fix it!

Right now there are multiple versions of 10.4.7 that are "special" Mac Pro versions.

While it might be possible to be software, I am not convinced.

As to different brands of routers, it depends on what chipsets they use probably more than what name is on the outside.

I do not see any problem or slowness on my Netgear (wired DSL modem-router/switch) and get normal downloads for a 1.5Mbps DSL line (180-200k).

I was referring to how when downloading large ISOs that ONLY Safari was able to do so successfully. I never had trouble pre-Mac Pro with G4 MDD (downloaded dozens of ISOs and never lost a connection).

There IS an ongoing issue with cable modems (see MacFixit) that use the chip used by Motorola in the 5100 or later models. Maybe that is different, it is definitely an old problem that has been around for years.

IPv6 has always been a problem, and is enabled by default.
There were problems with lookupd from 10.3.3 and early 2005 at least.

I hope it is software. 10.4.0 had changed networking a lot, and a lot of users had to wait for 10.4.2+ for their modems and networking equipment, and new drivers - from vendors - to be compatible with Apple's new OS. That is over a year ago. (There are always ongoing changes under the hood too, many of which only surface when something breaks.)

The next OS X update will hopefully be out sooner rather than later. Reminds me of the "10.2.7" which was only for the new G5 three years ago around same time period.

Note: I did not apply the security update or Airport update (don't have one), and on some things I like to a) wait a week, b) work on a clone test system.

save your money. I have an Apple router (AirPort Express Base Station) and the telephone service of Apple had me make all kinds of hard- and software tests (including a full reset of the Base Station). The culprit is either this false antenna-stuff (which doesn't seem to work with you) or an AirPort-Express-for-MacPro-card issue (they don't use the traditional AirPort Express cards in the Mac Pro): in my case the connection with the router and the DSL-modem functioned (if weak); the major default im my case is (was) a totally inefficient and insufficient cooperation with other Macs equipped with AirPort Extreme Cards.

I think only Apple can get things right on the hardware level. This is why I sent back even the MacPro I got in replacement for the first one and why I am waiting for a month or so before ordering a new one at the Apple Store.

where Lionel (¡un grand merci!) eventually circumscribed and pinned down the problem. It is not hardware (AirPort cards or antennae), but software (presumably driver). Since the machine is functioning perfectly under Windows XP…

By the way: the possessors of new IMacs should have (I am tempted to say: are entitled to have) analog problems.

Just updated and now I am getting between 7 and 8+ megabits per sec. was only getting between 1.5 and 3 before and I have an 8 megabit comcast connection.
