Internet connection slow only on Mac Pro

I just got a Mac Pro to replace G5 Dual 2. I hooked it up and transferred using Firewire process...everything came peachy keen.....but when I access internet just like G5 using Airport Express to connect to LinkSys router and cable modem. I get between 100 and 400 Kbps download and 250 upload on the Mac Pro. My G5 still gets 3000-3500 as does my crappy old Compaq Laptop...all three using wireless. I am not comfortable just tweeking settings....so I thought I would ask for some help.
Thanks

I'm using Safari with Earthlink Cable. Here is the speeds I'm getting

dslreports.com speed test result on 2006-09-30 15:34:51 EST:
3850 / 350
Your download speed : 3850 kbps or 481.2 KB/sec.
That is 42% better than an average user on mindspring.com

Your upload speed : 350 kbps or 43.8 KB/sec.
That is 0.8% better than an average user on mindspring.com

Mac Pro Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I'm using a D-Link Router

Hey atleast you guys can connect to WiFi, my MacPro has given up on any Wifi networks.

I've had it for about a week already. The first 2 days of having the MacPro my Wifi worked so-so, slow connection but i wasnt complaining. But on the 3rd day I noticed that my Airport wasnt detecting any wireless networks. Hasn't worked since.

I decided to call Mac Tech Support and they ran me through about an hour and a half of troubleshooting (most of which was common sense such as power-cycling the router and computer). Nothing they told me worked. Finally they told me to make an appointment at my local apple store (miami, flordia) and have them look at it.

I strongly belive that this is not an isolated problem. Since most people (im guessing) do not customize their MacPro with Airport its not as widespread, but those who have put Airport (such as I) have to figure out some way to get this to Apple.

If any of you have any fixes, help us out.

(BTW Im on the MacPro right now using Ethernet and all seems normal, speed and all, its that Airport that screws us over)

I just finished coming back from the Apple Store, they looked at the problem and figured out that I had a bad AirPort module installed. The Tech also mentioned how he has been replacing alot of them on the MacPros.

So if you have the same problem, get it checked out with your local Apple Store and hopefully the problem will get fixed.

I am also having problems with a very slow internet connection on my MacPro. My MP is sitting about 5 feet my from 4-1/2 yr old iMac using the same wireless network. My iMac can load nearly every page in 1-3 seconds. My MacPro takes 10 seconds just to load google.com! Loading the Apple Discussions page took three minutes! Ouch!

I was going to let my kids have my old iMac for playing around with iMovie and iDVD, and web surfing and games (they're actually fighting over it :*)

Guess I'll keep it for internet stuff until my Mac"Pro" works for wireless.

(My husband has offered to put an ethernet connection into my work room - but he would have to cut a hole in the dining room wall to pull the cable through. Given the fact that I'd end up fixing the hole in the wall, I'd rather wait to get the wireless working :*) vbg :*)

mine is also slow. I am getting better speeds then some of you. My update download is VERY slow. Around 30K/s. I called comcast, nothing was wrong on their end. The modem was weird when i did do the switch from PC to Mac.

I think I will do a longer power cycle tonight.

Also, airport is off, and I am plugged in via a wire.

I'm reading through the posts here and it seems to me that some of the bad connections being reported are from the Airport Extreme card? Try getting a new Airport card and see if it fixes the problem (thus, the importance of AppleCare.)

I'm on a Mac Pro using an Ethernet connection, and the bizDSL here gets 165KBps upload and download over ethernet. It is not connected to an Airport network.

Nice to see the Earthlink cable access working so well. 🙂

Grüße.

I thought I'd post an update on this issue. I have finally gotten the attention of Apple engineers with the help of my local Apple Store. I have now done a high number of tests and are reporting this back to them today.

Here are the facts about this problem (my spesific case):

1) Airport AND Ethernet (wired) connection is very very slow. I get typically 20% of the speed available through my ISP (often much less).

2) This is not a user configuration error or a router problem. I have a Macbook pro and a Dell PC in the same room. They both perform excellent.

3) The problem is not limited to OS X, I have the exact same problem in Windows XP SP2 (through Boot Camp). Yes, it's not a OS X issue, this must be firmware or hardware.

4) I have tried 3 different routers with different chipsets. I have also tried wireless encryption on/off and different types of encryption algoritms as described in other posts. But since the problem also exists with Ethernet I have given this one up completely.

5) When connecting a cable to one of the Ethernet ports it takes a long time until it is recognised. It also takes a long time before it gets a IP address through DHCP (tried serveral computers, and routers, only happen on Mac Pro). Some times it only reports the Ethernet connection as "Cable connected, but limited or no connection to the internet".

This is totally unacceptable and renders my Mac Pro useless. I'm not even able to get my work done on it. Apple! HELP.

Please: Everyone having this problem must report it to Apple imediately so they'll take ut seriously.
