Mid 2009 macbook pro battery is dead and fan is constantly ramped up (not due to heat). Would installing a new battery fix the fan problem?

Battery icon has an "x" over it and I need to have my laptop plugged in to be on. I've ordered a new battery to install, but I was wondering if it's possible that something else might be causing the fan to be on over drive constantly. I've tried resenting the SMC and the PRAM, but nothing has stopped the fans from running at higher than normal speeds.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

Does the Apple Hardware Test show any error codes ?.

So I tried running the test (shut down computer and hold down "D" key while turning back on), but the test or any error never came up. The computer just restarted normally. I've done it twice and my fan actually stopped running at the higher than normal speeds and my battery icon is now 0%!. I'm wondering if this is just a temperary fix. I still plan on replacing my battery.

About the Apple Hardware Test though, did I do it incorrectly?

Use the #2 installation disc that came originally with your MBP. It will have the Apple Hardware Test instructions on it.

If you've updated to Mavericks, you'll either need to use the original install DVD containing the AHT, or download the right one from Apple's servers, then replace the hidden /System/Library/CoreServices.diagnostics folder.

I think that replacing the battery is likely to stop the fan problem anyway.

Shoot. I don't think I have that anymore. I might try to take it to the Apple store to see if they could loan me an installation CD. Thank you all for your help!
