Black window in FaceTime.

When I open FaceTime on my Mac Mini, integrated monitor camera turns on but there is only a black window and no access to preferences (greyed out in the menu). However Skype works correctly.

FaceTime works fine on my iMac, MacBook, iPod and iPad.

I'm on Mavericks 10.9.3

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.

If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair

Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

I think it is now the only option. I made a Genius appointment at an Apple Store for tomorrow.

Thank you, Linc, for your efforts and your advice.

@ rgilbert

I use a new monitor Asus VK248H with an integrated camera and a microphone Bluemic TIKI. I had never used Face Time before with this Mini, but I do not think the monitor is concerned. I tested it with another Mac and I also tested my Mini with another monitor. And again, Skipe work properly.

Your suggestion to go to the Mac Mini forums is good, knowing all the problems that have been reported in connection with this Mini 2012 and the Intel HD Graphics 4000. I found nothing, however, about my specific problem. I await the outcome of the Genius Bar. Thank you very much.

My visit at the Genius Bar was rather surprising but conclusive.

- Face Time works perfectly on my Mac Mini, when connected to an Apple Display.

We have also found this thread on the Apple forum, on version 27" of the same monitor:

Need help with a Asus 27" monitor with webcam problem.

The problem is well identified by multiple users and, in their case much more important. The camera is quite useless and renders inoperative any applications that require a camera. Asus has not provided the cameras of these monitors, a driver compatible with the Mac.

My monitor is newer, it seems that improvements have been made and the camera now works correctly on all applications I tested (including Skype, PhotoBoot, MacJournal, Home Inventory) with the exception of Face Time. I find myself so lucky and I resign myself to live without Face Time on this computer.

But a small application, iGlasses, can solve the problem in addition to many other benefits, as long as we agreed to pay $ 20.
