Mail still constantly asks for Gmail password

I have been unable to use Mail for over a year now due to the fact that no matter what I do it asks me for my Gmail password every two minutes. I thought I would give it a try after upgrading to Yosemite Beta and I see it is still the same situation. Hard to believe that after YEARS of this known issue there is still no fix. Mail is unusable in this state and it forces me to us ***whisper*** Outlook ***gag***.

At least on Mavericks I could use Google Chat in Messages but that functionality is broken now in Yosemite.

I have deleted every Google related item in my keychain, deleted and reinstalled the account, said really nice things to my mac and it still won't cooperate. Now when I try to add the account In Yosemite it will only connect with Contacts and Calendar and can't even make the connection with Mail, Messages or Notes.

Strange because my Google Drive sync works just fine!

Anyone know a solution for this or are we going to wait a few more years for this remain unfixed?

Any help you can provide would be great. I would love to use Mail someday!

I'm having the same issue, but with only one of two google email accounts. That's what has me scratching my head. I signed in with my 1st gmail account when I first got my Mac, it hasn't asked for the password since. But when I added my 2nd gmail addy a few days later, it asks me everyday for the password!!! I just don't get it. Have you had any luck figuring this out yet? Thanks.

Same problem here.

Only started happening recently.

Enter the password – gets accepted, will randomly pop up a notification again, asking for same.

Funny thing is, if I ignore it – mails still come through – though, sometimes they don't. No consistency that I can see in the behaviour.

It's getting very tiresome.

As an aside – I do NOT have 2FA activated, and have set it to accept "less secure" apps...

Hi,

I would consider removing the Google tokens from the Keychain.

Open Keychain Access in the Applications/Utilities folder and remove the Google Token items form the Login keychain > Password section

Hi,

Google is an IMAP server meaning everything is on the Server end ( I would check that first in the Mail app though can you can set Google to do POP at their end)

The Account can then be deleted from the Mail App or turned Off in System Preferences > Internet accounts.

This removes the Account at the Mac end (you can still access GoogleMail via a Web Browser if you needed to).

Then you can Add Accounts back (in this case a Google one)

I would turn the App Off (Quit) in between as this Writes to the .Plist involved which would then get written to again when you add the "new" account (even though it has the same details).

I would prefer to do within the App but it can be done in System Preferences > Internet Accounts (I would still Quit Mail between the Turning Off of Mail for the Google Account and turning it back On again).

I'm having the same issue. It seems the password doesn't get stored or something, it will just keep asking for it like all 10 minutes or so. Must be a bug in most recent Yosemite? I'm having this issue only since I reinstalled Yosemite from scratch (most current version from App Store) - I wasn't having the problem before, with my 'older' Yosemite install which I was updating regularly.. any news on this? It's just so annoying.

HI,

When it happens go to the Window Menu and select the Connection Doctor

Ask it to check the Server logins. It should show you all the Accounts and the Outgoing servers as well (STMP)

The ones that are red may offer more info.

As an affirmative:

On

- MacOSX 10.10.3

- Apple Mail with the recurring mail fetch authentication failure (i.e., frequent requests for login and authentication failures reported in the logs - and no mail fetched) for a particular Google Apps mail account (say, nnnn@personal-domain.com hosted by google apps)

- Sending mail from Apple Mail worked for the same nnnn@personal-domain.com account

- Calendar working just fine for the same nnnn@personal-domain.com account

- Other Google Apps mail accounts were working

Deleting the account nnnn@personal-domain.com in the system preferences and then re-creating it did not correct the problem (but lost me my local copies of all the messages....)

Using Keychain Access to remove all entries in the keychain related to google and the nnnn@personal-domain.com identity did correct the problem for me - when I opened Mail next I was asked to enter the credentials - and no worries after that. Looking at the keychain I noted that the Google tokens had been recreated, with new values.

Try setting up the account manually. (Uncheck the box for the option to automatically set up account in the new account setup window). Enter the information and your password. This allowed my Gmail password to work properly, whereas I had the same problem as described by others in this forum when I allowed Apple Mail to set up the account for me. Hope this helps.

alright i decided to post this up since its hardly anywhere, hope this works for you guys. I also found the solution somewhere, but i'm too lazy to go find it again. You have to generate a one time password for your device (mac mail, ipad mail etc). This worked for my wife since she was having problems sending out mail from her gmail account on Mac Mail.

STEP 1 - Log into your gmail account & click on Account(under your portrait top right of gmail)

STEP 2 - Click on Sign in & Security

STEP 3 - Select App Passwords and it'll take you to the screen to generate a one time password for your device

STEP 4 - Generate password for your Mac Mail etc...

STEP 5 - Copy the password generated(Picture or device in this screenshot will vary depending on which device you're generating it for)

STEP 6 - Go to your Mac Mail Preferences or Mail Settings or whatever its called, and paste the password generated.

That should do it, hope this helps out. Restart Mail etc...
