Does my Imac work with USB3?

Can I upgrade to a USB3 memory card reader with my 3 year old IMAC?

As requested, I am following up with my results...

After several hours of messing around with the settings, I was finally able to get the USB three side of the port working. I was never, however, able get a drive connected via the eSATA port. I can't say if the issues were caused by problems on the MacBook Pro and Mavericks side of things, or with the Kanex adapter. All I can say for sure is that the product was NOT "plug and play" (for me), as advertised by Kanex.

While theoretical USB3 speeds are 5 Gbps (gigabits per second), Kanex does indicate that actual speeds are about 3.5 Gbps (gigabits per second).

Using "AJA System Test" utility, I got the following results (averaged over about a dozen tests for each port)...

Using the USB2 ports: 30.8 MB/s Read and 23.4 MB/s Write

Using Kanex USB3 prt: 84.5. MB/s Read and 51.2 MB/s Write

That means that I doubled the effective speeds for $80... not exactly a bargain. When you convert the "AJA System Test" values (given in MB/s) to Gbps (as used by Kanex), you get "0.4 Gbps" (0.4 Gigabits per second). That's a FAR cry from "3.5 Gbps", the effective transfer rate advertised. In other words, it's approximately 11% of what they advertise!

Having said that, the adapter's actual rate of transfer greatly exceeds Kanex's actual rate of support !

Don't waste your time or money!

Thanks for the feedback and sorry this doen't perform as advertise.

The two protocols just have too many disparate variables to convert/overcome.

These types of adapters will simply never, EVER work correctly.

Sorry you found out the hard way.

Is it too late to try and get your cash back for this? Does Kanex or whomever seller you bought this from have a return policy for this device?

If you are not happy with this, I would try and return it for either refund or product credit.
