Slow macbook pro

Hi, I've gone through all the wonderful suggestions on:

and

My MacBook suddenly started running slow

and would appreciate some personalised feedback on what I can do to optimise my macbook pro's use. I've uninstalled google chrome (still using google drive but removed it from auto launch on system preferences) and deleted any apps that were not 100% necessary.

It's clear I need to clear out some space because I'm low with 14gigs, however, this problem has persisted even when I had 50 gigs free. The fan makes a LOT of noise, the laptop heats up to boiling and I find youtube and facebook work terribly. When I watch 1080p movies, they are also choppy. A friend told me my CPU must be shot, so ideally I'm looking to improve this. I'll start deleting unnecessary movies/photos immediately. Is there anything else I can do?

Hallo Charlotte,

a lot already said in the two threads you mention, so we now answer to your wish of "optimising" your macbookpro.

- You have to free space on your startdisk. I propose to move about 50GB to an other (external) disk. Only user data (movies that you do not need anymore or only sporadic.

- I also want you to consider Mavericks, because that OS is much more efficient than older OS, especially with the memory handling. But is is a big step from SnowLeopard and you have to think it over very carefully, since the user interface is very different. Also you must ascertain that the software you use now is absolutely Mavericks compatible.

- You must have a good redundant backup strategy, maybe consider a dedicated TimeMachine external disk also.

- Your decision to let Chrome go, is a good one, because Chrome is crap aside from being fast. If you want something else than safari, use Firefox or Opera: good, safe and fast. Only use one browser at the same time, even if you have more than one installed.

- Google Drive was giving issues in the short past, but that app is OK now.

- the google.keystone plist failed to load, it is not really important, but that plist is used for Google apps software update check, and runs every 10 secs or so. It does not hurt to remove that plist, but I think it will return as long as you have something form Google software on your mac.

- check if you have the Moon Widget on your dashboard, if so delete it, it does run out of hand regularly.

- Qmaster is started up always, what is it for? I don't like apps that go into the SystemLibrary on "their own initiative".

- Then there is a Roxio entry, maybe a leftover. You do not need Roxio I guess, uninstall it. If it is already gone, delete the roxio kext.
