They're basically the same; if the drive is smaller than 4GB, it might get formatted with an older FAT version.

1) Which is the older version? MS-DOS (FAT) or MS-DOS (FAT 32)
2) I am using 1 TB external HDD.- Is it better to format with MS-DOS (FAT) or MS-DOS (FAT 32) ?
3) (FAT 32) - does it mean allowed maximum file size is 32 GB ?
4) For using in MAC computer as well as in Windows, when should I do ExFAT format and when should I do MS-DOS (FAT)?
1. FAT could refer to either FAT12, FAT16, or FAT32.
2. The earlier FAT versions can't be used on a drive which is 4GB or larger.
3. No. It uses a 32-bit FAT; the maximum file size is 4GB.
4. You should use FAT32 with Mac OS X 10.6.4 or earlier, exFAT if the drive will contain files which are 4GB or larger, or NTFS if you either don't need to write to the drive or are willing to install software which lets Mac OS X do so.

1) Is it ExFAT is based on 64 bit and MS-DOS (FAT) is based on 32 bit?
2) Is that ExFAT formatted HDD is faster than MS-DOS (FAT) formatted HDD?
1. Yes.
2. It's about the same.

1. It is ExFat that has no redundant file table, which is why it is very difficult to recover data from (compared to FAT32)
2. No difference in speed.
If you use ExFat backup regularly.
