GPU panic MacBook Pro 15'' Mid-2010

Cheers to all,

This is not the first, but I believe not the last thread about this issue. So here we go, I'm having GPU Panic attacks, and yes my MacBook Pro is Mid-2010, and yes it has a motherboard issue (like on most of the threads, symptoms are the same). Reasons why I'm writing are actually three:

1. After having a chat with official Apple representative online, I was suggested to go to official Apple repair shop for diagnosis, so I've went and voila I need to change motherboard on my laptop. In France they evaluated it 560 euros, when my used laptop here costs around 600-800 euros - doesn't seem logical to me, but ok, I'd be willing to pay this money if not one phrase told by representative in the shop: "Warranty for new motherboard would be 3 months"... it means that I'd pay more than a half of the price of my laptop is worth now, for something that is not sure to be working properly e.g. in half of the year?? (here on forums people speak about that replacing motherboard is not always the solution, since one that'll be replaced can be faulty as well)

2. Another point to say, is that I've noticed these errors appearing not after Mountain Lion, and not after installing Mavericks (or updates to it), but after doing SMC (System Management Control) reset (was suggested to do it by Blizzards in order to increase performance for their games - actually did help) somewhere in February. Another interesting observation is that when I've did it second time couple of days ago my GPU Panic errors had started to appear not once per week (fyi after first times, I've started using gfxCard, forcing my GT330M to run all the time), but now two times per days (latest one is below). Can there be a link of these errors to SMC?

3. Would some of you recommend me a solution for my MacBook Pro without paying 560 euros for something that'd have warranty of 3 months? At this points my hopes are that this issue would be resolved in Yosemite - or wouldn't it? (seems like people who started receiving these errors in Mountain Lion didn't have resolutions after installing Mavericks) It's just sad, since it seems to me that the only solutions is actually getting rid of my good ol' laptop...

3.1. Little P.S. question here: laptops that just have Intel graphic chips (e.g. 13'' inch one) can't experience this sort of errors at all?

Specs of my MacBook Pro:

MacBook Pro 6,2

2.66 GHz Intel Core i7

8GB 800 MHz DDR3 (this one I've changed myself in beginning of 2012)

NVIDIA GT330M

This is a common failure in that particular model. There was an extended repair warranty from Apple, but I think it has expired although you can ask at a local Apple vendor. Meanwhile there is a temporary workaround:

The problem is due to the discreet GPU failing. Download gfxCardStatus 2.3 and use it to disable the GPU. But the only permanent solutions are:

  1. Replace the motherboard.
  2. Buy a newer computer.

I would uninstall CUDA.

If it's too late for your unit to be repaired under the recall, and you don't want to pay for a new logic board, you may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching. To use the discrete graphics processor, you'll need a third-party utility to switch to it manually.

Often the panics start to happen after a system upgrade. If the upgrade was recent, and you have backups, then you can revert to a previous OS X version.

Jun 29, 2014 11:47 PM in response to Kappy

Thanks for answer Kappy, but as you've said, my waranty is finished since it's now more than four years since I own this laptop.

Concerning gfxCardStatus 2.3, I do use it, and it was sort of helping until I've done SMC reset for second time - you think there might be a link between these panic attacks and Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)?

Also, you speak about replacing motherboard as a permanent solution, while other people say that there is not garantee that this problem will not come back in the future with new motherboard - how can I be sure replacing it that it will not be a waste of money? And don't you find it a little strange that official waranty for this peace is just 3 months?

Finally you say that you'd unistall CUDA - can you please tell me more about it, and how does it affect my situation?

Oct 19, 2014 11:53 PM in response to zhanghang0529

Hey zhanghang0529,

Yesterday I've updated to OS X Yosemite too and I have to say that it's marvelous! But the pity is (you can already guess), I still receive same ol' panic attacks - Apple haven't done nothing to resolve this issue 😟 (had to turn on again gfxCard to continue working)

So here is what I'm going to do before spending money on new laptop: I'll downgdrage to Mountain Lion! Anyone thinks this is a bad idea? Please tell me then why?

The only fear I do have concerns all the libraries I have like iPhoto, etc. – they’re all now updated to latest versions corresponding to Yosemite. How would they act on Mountain Lion?

Oct 20, 2014 12:04 AM in response to Sunny_Black

That is bad news. I will see how long mine will hold up.

Downgrading is an option, just hoping all the softwares will work fine.

I have seen people on youtube use a hot air gun to heat the gpu unit for a while to solve this problem. They claim it works. But I am an electrical engineer and I do not see the reason clearly how it can work. So I do not recommend you to try.

You can also use gfxCard to force it to work on the intel gpu. Most of the softwares work fine on it and the problem never happened to me again. The only problem is that it is sometimes slow for some softwares and you need to click the switch every time you start your computer and when some softwares force it to nviada gpu.

But it is more than four years old and I guess it should be replaced maybe? I am saving money for the next release.

Oct 20, 2014 12:14 AM in response to zhanghang0529

I think It is possible that some scripts overload the GPU and make it crash. But it is very likely to be the hardware problem of the NAVIDIA GPU. If yours is still in the 3-year-program, the mother board can be replaced for free. If not, try to talk to the manager of the Apple Store. S/he may be able to replace it for free. I went there last year after several months more than three years, and they won't replace it for free. Maybe you will have better luck.

Oct 20, 2014 12:21 AM in response to zhanghang0529

zhanghang0529,

Before, I'd want to receive reply on that topic from someone who had done it, because I don't want to create extra problems with downgrade.

Concerning 'temporary' solutions: yeah, they work, like gfxCard, heating the GPU unit for some people (althouth I find it a little extreme), but it's not as it should be, this is not native idea that was born in Apple design offices. And I want to laptop to work as it was designed to work...

About new laptop: call me old school, but I prefer things to be fixed before really getting rid of them. I went to local Apple authorized repair shop, but as in your case, they could only recommend me to buy new motherboard or the new laptop.

Oct 20, 2014 9:16 AM in response to Sunny_Black

That is correct. Exactly what I told you to begin with. If you use the gfxCard to ignore the discreet GPU you should be able to continue using the computer, but don't expect the same graphics performance. You can take it to your local Apple shop and have the motherboard replaced but there is no assurance this won't happen again. Or you can buy a new or newer model, post-2011. Those are you available options.
