GPU panic MacBook Pro 15'' Mid-2010

This is not the first, but I believe not the last thread about this issue. So here we go, I'm having GPU Panic attacks, and yes my MacBook Pro is Mid-2010, and yes it has a motherboard issue (like on most of the threads, symptoms are the same). Reasons why I'm writing are actually three:

1. After having a chat with official Apple representative online, I was suggested to go to official Apple repair shop for diagnosis, so I've went and voila I need to change motherboard on my laptop. In France they evaluated it 560 euros, when my used laptop here costs around 600-800 euros - doesn't seem logical to me, but ok, I'd be willing to pay this money if not one phrase told by representative in the shop: "Warranty for new motherboard would be 3 months"... it means that I'd pay more than a half of the price of my laptop is worth now, for something that is not sure to be working properly e.g. in half of the year?? (here on forums people speak about that replacing motherboard is not always the solution, since one that'll be replaced can be faulty as well)

2. Another point to say, is that I've noticed these errors appearing not after Mountain Lion, and not after installing Mavericks (or updates to it), but after doing SMC (System Management Control) reset (was suggested to do it by Blizzards in order to increase performance for their games - actually did help) somewhere in February. Another interesting observation is that when I've did it second time couple of days ago my GPU Panic errors had started to appear not once per week (fyi after first times, I've started using gfxCard, forcing my GT330M to run all the time), but now two times per days (latest one is below). Can there be a link of these errors to SMC?

3. Would some of you recommend me a solution for my MacBook Pro without paying 560 euros for something that'd have warranty of 3 months? At this points my hopes are that this issue would be resolved in Yosemite - or wouldn't it? (seems like people who started receiving these errors in Mountain Lion didn't have resolutions after installing Mavericks) It's just sad, since it seems to me that the only solutions is actually getting rid of my good ol' laptop...

3.1. Little P.S. question here: laptops that just have Intel graphic chips (e.g. 13'' inch one) can't experience this sort of errors at all?

Kappy,

Any chance you could give me some insight. I don't understand script, but I get the gist of it and am under the understanding that this is probably happening with mine too. Below is one of the probably 50 panics that have happened to my computer at various times. I have downloaded gfxcardstatus 2.3 as prescribed and am using the integrated only and since havent had a problem, but this has been only within the last hour or so. Please let me know if there is anything different in my case. If you need anything else let me know, I have also posted a thread, albeit probably in the wrong section, on this before with no response (15" Macbook Pro (Mid-2010) keeps spontaneously restarting) if you need any more info. I am currently running OSX Yosemite Version 10.10 (14A389).

That's the same GPU failure, with the same cause.

Your alternatives are the same; either disable GPU switching or bite the bullet and purchase a new machine.

Also, Im running the integrated only selection and I don't really see any difference in the operation or appearance of applications and content on my Macbook Pro. Can you tell me what types of programs, situations, or media will suffer from the integrated only selection?

I have the same problem, with mountain lion, maverick and now yosemite, i use gfxcardstatus 2.1 and 2.3 , and the problem is fixed, i have 3 months with 1 kernel panic, i hope apple send us a patch to fix this issue, why its a software bug, with snow leopard I never have a kernel panic

I hv same issue.

nvidia GPU failed when i use certain apps (iMovie, Photoshop, garageband,etc..)

So, my solution is: download n install smc fan control, then set FAN to min 5000rpm when you run those certain apps.

or set with this higher rpm when AC power. so no need to worry about battery.

In my opinion, nvidia GPU failed when reach certain temperature (more than 70C). so manual set fan will help this.

Now i don't need to worry about gpu kernel panic when editing movie. n still got nvidia gnu performance.

Yosemite kept crashing on nvidia gpupanic few times a day unless switched to integrated gpu, which is not really an option for me - have to use external display on side.

Upgraded to El Captain from Yosemite on my 6.2 MBPro ... could be just some coincidence, but it looks like something has changed since I haven't seen a crash so far - I am on El Captain almost for three weeks. I noticed the firmware was updated along with OS:

Boot ROM Version: MBP61.0057.B10

SMC Version (system): 1.58f17

Similar experience anybody?

Yes, it works.

after upgrade to ElCap, and uninstall smcfan and gfxcardstatus.

No kernel panic, n no intermittent shutdown anymore. Even if i use Photoshop, iMovie, Garageband. Wow!

update:

to stress test I have turned off the "reduce transparency" in SP->Accessibility->Display, the crashes are back in ElCapt. (it sounded too good to be true anyway). Now I have toggled the option again, so transparency is reduced and continue observing.

In general i don't think there is an ultimate cure besides the HW replacement - and I do not consider to replace the board as it is just not economical option now.

The GPU still crashes for me (there was a crash just while i was typing this post).

But I believe anything what helps to reduce load (and heat) of the GPU generally helps to reduce crashes and sometimes to almost bearable level, so I am putting the summary of my findings/experiences.

El Capt. is an improvement - most likely because of it's optimized graphics library.
reducing transparency seems to help - again gives GPU time to breath
the trick with ForceSessionDrawsVirtualFramebuffer described on another thread seems to help (i only used it on Yosemite so far) - probably slows down letting GPU wait and thus relax a bit more
I am now trying smcFanControl boosting the cooling - On several threads people mentioned problem arose from overheating of GPU (even affecting the soldering of GPU to MB??), anyway it would make sense if that helps a bit.
stopping the use of external monitor seems to make a big difference (even when the discrete gpu is still on), but it is not a long term option for me.
the chance of crash seems to be higher after waking up from sleep (the GPU is busy bringing the stuff on screen??) - I have prolonged the machine go to sleep timeouts.

What do you think about installing OSX Snow Leopard? I am thinking to install Snow Leopard but I do not know whether that will help to at least minimize this issue. Another problem with Snow Leopard is that I don't know if all applications are going to work.

going back may help, if it's an option for you. My problems started when I installed Yosemite together with SSD a year ago - just about a time when the Apple repair program ended. On old HDD with Maverick it probably happen, but not so massively so it hadn't even risen my attention.
