maps avoid toll roads

I used to love google maps but they have made it a big mess and very hard to use. I use Apple Maps in the car. I would like to use Apple Maps for trip planning on my my iMac but if Apple Maps can't do "avoid toll roads" then it is essentially worthless as a trip planner. I saw some previous posts about this. Doe Apple Maps still not know how to "avoid tolls." Pretty hard to believe. If you can't make alternate routes the whole application is not worth using for any trip planning.

Ummmm....

Yes this post is two years old, but being that this is still an open issue and the answer that OP marked as correct (when in fact is not correct) makes this google searchable post regarding an open issue still relevant. If you know of a way to archive it so it does not come up when people are asking these questions, I think that would be appropriate. Otherwise, people will still find it and read it as an answer that solved the issue.

Jonathan clearly stated at the end of his post that he may be missing something and I was simply trying to clarify, one for myself, but also for others that may have and will come upon this post, because it wasn't clear for me after reading all the responses, especially his.

The fact that OP marked it as correct is not my problem, nor am I here to correct him, but now at least when people find this, they will hopefully not take the answer at face value.

I have already contacted Apple support regarding the issue as well.

I also realize there are other apps for navigation, but that is not the point of this post. It's regarding the Apple Maps app.

Thanks!

nope you are wrong. I can get alternatives sure but most often they still use a toll section in the route. Annoying since for me tolls get expensive quick in Melbourne Australia. I know that I can use alternative routes as I know my city but i cant always predict the traffic. The ETA is adjusted thanks to them coding a traffic feature but i cant preselect the routes i want to go on. I want to save money going on the quietest non-toll arterial roads.

Google Maps for time being.

Oh and Map accuracy is the other elephant in the room. Apple-maps-premature-release-hangover anyone? 0_o

I live near a toll road, so all suggested routes usually indicate a toll, even the alternatives. The solution provided is not really a solution to the question, it just happened to work for the individual that asked the question. Toll roads are showing up everywhere, and a lot are not usable if you don't have a toll tag, especially annoying when traveling across states. Apple should incorporate a "real" method for avoiding tolls.

There is a way you can choose to avoid either toll roads and/or highways in Apple Maps:

1: Find the destination you want to travel to.

2: Click the blue "Directions" button. You'll be brought to the interface where you can choose one of the three routes to get there.User uploaded file

3: Scroll down on the routing interface to where it says "Driving Options". Click on that. It will show you two toggle switches.User uploaded file

4: The switches are self-explanatory - switch the "Tolls" on if you want to avoid Toll Roads, on if you don't mind them. Same thing with Highways.

Hope this helps!

The bigger issue here is Apple does not offer a way to avoid highways altogether. Sometimes I'm not always looking for the quickest way there, but instead the safest.

Example: A month ago I was in a town (on business) I was not familiar with and the weather turned very ugly. I did not feel safe getting on the highway to return to my hotel, so I was forced to go to the big "G" (Google) to find alternate routes. Apple really needs to add some customization when it comes to routing navigation.

Why is this marked as solved?

You would need to ask the original poster who marked it solved almost two years ago.

I don't think Jonathan understands the issue, so allow me to clarify.

I suspect Jonathan completely understood the question. Apparently, the original poster, the person who actually asked the question thought so, too.

Meanwhile, there is a huge range of third party navigation apps. Perhaps one of them would better suit your needs.

Best of luck.

I Would highly recommend putting a feature request on Apple's website. This will be directed towards the engineering team behind maps. I would assume if enough people request it they will consider it in a future release. I've already submitted my feedback about avoiding tolls as an option which is much needed!

HI Johnathan: Hey, you're right. I see the alternate routes in light grey. Okay, one other question: Can I drag the route line to any street I want to personally taylor the route further than the suggested routes. I'm used to being able to do this on google maps and I'm having trouble dragging and re-routing. Oh, I'm on an iMac as I try to do this. Not on my iPhone.

Again, as mentioned by Meg in the post right above yours, you need to submit your feedback to Apple. Nothing will come of it posting here.

The best answer is not correct. I don't understand why people voted for it. Where I live, the multiple routes that are given all require tolls. Apple Maps should give the option for a non toll road but they do not (a lot of the time)

The truth is, I prefer Apple Maps...but until such a time that Apple Maps allows me to choose routes without tolls, I will be using Google Maps. It has been three years since Apple Maps has been released and it is quite ridiculous that this small feature has not been implemented.
