maps avoid toll roads

Why is this marked as solved?

The alternate routes provided do NOT necessarily avoid toll routes and it's possible that all three routes will take you to a toll road.

I don't think Jonathan understands the issue, so allow me to clarify.

There should be an "AVOID TOLLS" option that will force the map system to provide a route (whether it's the primary route or alternate routes) that will not use toll roads. The fact that the route provided alerts the user that the route requires tolls does not actually keep the system from making a route that uses tolls.

You asked why it was marked as solved. I took your question at face value. And, I assumed that you wanted to be able to avoid toll routes in your navigation app. As what you want is not currently possible with Apple Maps, I offered an alternative suggestion.

It's usually my go to app but, today, it kept trying to send me over a closed road in Pittsburgh. This is the second time it's done that. Weirdly, it only fails me in Pittsburgh.

They've really cleaned up the interface in the last few months. It's much more aesthetically pleasing. And the warnings for cops, and obstacles are always useful.

Although Apple Maps sometimes provides non toll routes (which it does not do consistently), it does not provide assurance that if you make a wrong turn and when it recalcilates that it will continue to pursue a non toll option - this is a fatal flaw

further, when travelling in a foreign country and Siri is set to English, Siri cannot pronounce street names and annoyingly says "toward it". Hopefully someone at Apple picks up on this and fixes "it".

Apple Maps has great graphics but is not a truly global App and lacks severely when traveling abroad re transit, traffic and basic search results.

"Fatal"? Please provide documentation of any deaths caused by this.

The main reason for apple not including "AVOID TOLL'S" is due to the fact that they are getting paid to not allow this function. Apple maps is powered by TOMTOM so if Apple enables users to avoid tolls why would people pay $90 for the TOMTOM navigation. Therefore apple will over run other navigation applications, so they are getting paid not to allow this feature. When companies make money they don't care about the users they only care about getting richer, if they did care this issue would have been resolved years ago but this issue has constantly been looked over and is annoying the everyday user.

WHAT!? You're joking, right? That's one of the crazier ideas that I've seen posted in ASC in months. The reason you pay for Tom Tom is it stores its entire map database on the phone, so you don't use cellular data to constantly download maps. And if that was Apple's true plan they would have banned WAZE and Google Maps, both of which offer toll road avoidance, and both of which are free. And both of which are much better than Apple Maps.

Someone forgot to put on their tinfoil hat this morning. The mind control rays are leaking through.

Feature request has been on their desk since 2015.

I know at this point we are all beating a dead horse, but this problem is becoming more and more relevant in my area due to the NTTA making new toll roads all the time that will NEVER be paid off (these tolls no longer pay for the road, they simply take a profit with no end date, which I do not agree with). And using them is no longer chump change, it cost me $12.50 to hop on one the other day for about 7 miles! I'm sorry, but this is ridiculous to me.

This feature has been on every map system since Rand McNally's and Microsoft Maps maps back in the 90's. It's not some side feature that just appeals to a few people, it's a major issue for those the drive near toll roads.

It's my opinion that the people that use this feature simply use Google Maps or any other map system and don't bother telling Apple about it because it's a pain for most to take the time and it's really easy to just install another app. If it wasn't so easy to just use another system, I believe more people would be contacting Apple about it. I just don't understand why this feature is not built in... It almost makes the conspiracy theories plausible, because why not include it?

People who believe in conspiracy theories will never be convinced that the explanation is usually far more banal. Therefore, it's not worth the time to even bother trying to get them to see sense.

There is but it's harder to find than necessary. Type in the address, you'll get a long blue button with the word Directions and underneath the time it will take (dot) drive, ie 52 min. drive ...... This is all on that long blue button......now tap on that blue button. Now you'll have the : To (address)

tap between the space of To/ From and the cross

......more options with different times should come up but down the bottom you should hopefully see Driving Options in blue ......... if so tap on it. Eureka!!!!!!! There we have the option to avoid Tolls and Highways. Slide the slider to avoid tolls........ like I wrote, harder than it should be.

I found a possible work around...may not work for all, but try it. When you select your route, choose walking rather than driving. It will avoid highways.
