Aloha Darrell. Let's put this discussion on hold for a couple of days. I need to do some more learning on the forum before I can help you. I'll get in touch on one of your old posts. Till then don't worry about it, we'll get it sorted out. Stay well. Bob.
Bob,
sounds good. I will be here and checking. Be Safe. Darrell
still no news bro?
Well, after a week of filibuster from Apple I have finally restored my IPad to operating condition. As was outlined in a similar thread, it appears that if your iPad's serial number was lost on the Apple server, it is "persona non grata" and you will get the message "Replacement needed". This fact is apparently not known by the whizz kids at the genius bar in the Sydney Apple Store or even by the first contact when you ring support.
So the lessons are:
1. Your iPad does NOT need to be replaced - nor do you need to fork out AUD$310 to have them look at your machine.
2. Ring Support and ask to be escalated to an engineer who will allocate you a case number.
3. Give the engineer you serial number and ask him to check that it is in the Apple system.
4. Wait two days for the engineer to call back and follow his instructions to reactivate.
5. Recover apps, music etc from your iTunes
6. Thank profusely the engineer, and then wonder why Apple has not come clean on what is a fairly easy fix ( the conspiracy theory is that they want to rake off more of your money in repairs or new purchases)
Good luck!
That is good news indeed. Congratulations on your determination and thank you for posting the solution.
i already talk to apple care both through 15 times live chat and 3 times call but they didn't let me talk to ios engineer, and also 2 times go to apple authorized service they only suggest replaced unit with cost $306 and 3 month to wait. Could you help me?

I Have an iPad 2 on WiFi and tried to upgrade to 7.1.2 today. The screen has frozen on an iTunes connect screen and this is not clearing with a hard reset. I do not have access to my iMac to connect to iTunes. Any suggestions on how to get my iPad operational?
Tonymce, Your problem is not the same as the problem in this post. You need to start a new post to get answers to your specific problem.
When you update the iOS, you should ALWAYS perform a backup prior to the update. And, in case you have problems, you should NEVER perform the update when you don't have access to your sync computer. There's no way to get operational without your computer.

You may need to restore, the new update is BIG. My iPad had the same exact message, I booted and restored my iPad.
I have just spent the last 5 hours with the same problem. I spoke to the apple online support and they have referred me to my local istore. I'm really annoyed because I know that it is not my ipad but a software compatibility issue. Please tell me how you managed to get hold of the engineers. They absolutely refused to give me an numbers and have very nicely told me that I must have it looked at by my local service provider and discuss payment options with them. I'm so frustrated with this, I really would appreciate your feedback. Btw I'm in Johannesburg.
Thanks
can anyone (ex. from australia) ring to apple care instead of me. because my country apple care don't want to solve the same problem/

Greetings Bob,
It has been a long time since we last spoke. Since our last correspondence on July 8, a resolution to this the IOS7.1.2 upgrade. And a "replacement is needed" message is still without a resolution. From the correspondence you have deslt with, Is this really happening to all iPad 2s , regardless of whether the iPad is a WiFi only or WiFi + data plan? Resolution to this problem seems to be taking longer then the FaceTime problem back in April. Has anyone explained the problem to you and is this Engineer in Australia still working on resolving it?
Aloha Darrell.
Glad to hear from you again. Other then a few more people reporting the problem I haven't heard anything.
To change the subject for a second , sorry for taking so long to get back to you about what settings you use to follow your posts. The two best ways I found are your Bio page or content at the top of this page.
For your Bio page tap your name or avatar or link.

For content, tap content at the top of this page then authored on the left. There are other ways and different views but I like keeping things simple. Stay well. Bob.

Thanks Bob , I made the changes as you recommended. Going back to the iPad again, I think I asked this question before, but I do not think I ever received an answer. I think I read a post from one of your colleagues that stated the IOS 7.1,2 problem did not. Happen to iPad 2 (WiFi only). Did you happen to see it?
You're welcome. I didn't see the post you mentioned. Since the cause of the problem remains unknown I don't know if it's possible to predict if a certain model is immune from experiencing it.
Good Day Bob, I did a little research and looked back on the question I asked you regarding iPad 2 should not have the trouble with the replacement needed response when attempting to upgrade to IOS 7.1.2. I know you respond to a lot of posts, so I do not blame you for not remembering. Here is a brief excerpt of what I could find:

It means something went wrong but nobody seems to know what. Check this thread from an earlier update.
"Replacement needed" appeared on my iPad 2 after software update
When I reread this thread, I found this post , which led me to ask my question:

I have been in regular contact with AppleCare who are very helpful. The issue has been escalated to the iOS Engineers (in Australia) and they said the issue is affecting some cellular iPad 2's (WiFi only iPad 2's should not be affected), and is definitely a server backend configuration problem with the cellular connections.
You can prove this by inserting a SIM Card into your cellular iPad 2 and checking the status of the cellular connection to your provider. It should say "Searching..." however I have found that mine says "No Service", causing the iPad failing to activate saying "Replacement Needed". Sometimes a Service or a connection to the cellular network is needed to activate the iPad.
Hopefully I should have another update for you guys soon!
I am not sure if youse123 is a colleague, but wifi iPad 2s should not be affected is what caught my eye.
Darrell
Just tried update to iOS 7.1.2. Why has do I get a "replacement needed message"?
