Q: Second display problem with 10.9.4

After installing Mavericks 10.9.4 my second display stop working, does not detect external display anymore, I even try the "Detect Display".  I downloaded and install the 10.9.4 Combo update, it doesn't work,  try a clean install of OS X Mavericks but nothing working to solve this problem. I try downgrade with my time machine but the restore process take about 25 hours to finish connecting via Ethernet cable, and I can't wait that long... Someone are experience the same problem I have with this update?

My computer specs:

Processor  2.5 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Graphics  AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512 MB

Capacity: 500GB

I just have one thunderbolt on my iMac. And I have the cable with thunderbolt to HDMI.

    Try SMC and PRAM reset.

I have the same problem with an ASUS PB278Q over thunderbolt. Not responding in any way. The problem got introduced in 10.9.3, the only thing that helped was a rollback to 10.9.2 and that is what I will to tonight. How unfortunate.

    APPLE, please fix this.

Same thing with a MacPro 3.1 Quad Core Xeon + Nvidia GeForce GTX 680 with 4 Apple Display 23".

Since 10.9.3, the one on DVI-D output always stay off, even after a PRAM reset. The monitor have been changed to verify.

None of Apple nor last avalaible Nvidia drivers solve the problem.

    And 10.9.4 changes nothing.

It sounds like an OSX bug.

I brought another cable today and the second display is still not working. So, I wasted money because Apple can't do things right. Shame on you Apple, your high quality products it's over, I miss Steve Jobs, I think he's rolling in his grave.

Get a free Apple Developer account and report the problem to Apple

    BugReporter

    <http://bugreporter.apple.com>

Free ADC (Apple Developer Connection) account needed for BugReporter.

Anyone can get a free account at:

    <http://developer.apple.com/programs/register/>

And trust me, I've been an Apple user since '88, and Steve Jobs was just as capable of screwing things up as anyone else (he was not a perfect man).  I still miss him but I'm not going to blame any problem that occurs because Steve is not there any more.

Rather let Apple know there is a problem, as this forum is just a way to get fellow Mac users to try and help.

I lost my second monitor, as well... the same thing happened with 10.9.3, and I fixed it with the following kext replacement. I just repeated the procedure, and my monitor is back; Apple, this is getting old.

To everyone who hasn't seen this -

Re: 10.9.3 only lets me use 2 of my 3 30" displays

May 17, 2014 2:34 AM (in response to frabtious)

down load kext utility here  http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/Kext-Utility.shtml

    download Kexts here   https://www.dropbox.com/s/a510p6a9immdboc/Kexts.zip

    unzip the file

delete all Geforce and NVDA kexts located in your system/library/extensions

open kext utility and drop the all the kext files you downloaded on the window

    wait till complete

    reboot

    now all monitors working again!

gatd4's solution worked perfectly for me! It might not work for non-NVDIA Macs, but it worked on my 2008 Mac Pro. Thank goodness - good luck!

Hello therandyzone! Thanks for your reply.

How do I know if this is the right Kexts files for my iMac?

I attempted to roll back to the 10.9.2 kext for my AMD 6000 and it made the display unusable even with HDMI (which is what i'm left with after 10.9.3).

WRT the developer account suggestion, this bug has been filed, and refiled... they've known about it for some time (a bug filed against it receiving number 17083693 was closed as a duplicate of the even older 16197028).

With 10.9.4 being released fixing nothing related to this old issue, it's apparent that Apple doesn't care about the subset of users who are crippled by something as basic as having a correct display.

Hmm... I'm afraid that this particular fix won't do the trick for systems with AMD graphics cards; I should have paid closer attention to your post before I responded to you specifically. I was just trying to be helpful by relaying what had worked for me.

It's distressing that Apple keeps delivering kexts that are clearly causing problems.

Just got off the phone with support, then senior support. Tried all the usual's, SMC reset, PRAM reset, port tests....

Used a program sent to me to capture my system settings. Uploaded it to engineering.. More to come........

Nice.. keep fighting the good fight.

Feel free to refer them to either pre-existing filed bugs (17083693, 16197028). Presumably the latter, and definitely the former, have system state captures and logs attached out the wazoo.
