Second display problem with 10.9.4

After installing Mavericks 10.9.4 my second display stop working, does not detect external display anymore, I even try the "Detect Display". I downloaded and install the 10.9.4 Combo update, it doesn't work, try a clean install of OS X Mavericks but nothing working to solve this problem. I try downgrade with my time machine but the restore process take about 25 hours to finish connecting via Ethernet cable, and I can't wait that long... 😟 Someone are experience the same problem I have with this update?

My computer specs:

Processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512 MB

Capacity: 500GB

I just have one thunderbolt on my iMac. And I have the cable with thunderbolt to HDMI.

I had the same issue so I called and paid for apple care… was an awesome experience, thought I would share the value:

After all of the typical troubleshooting steps failed to resolve anything... he walked me through the following:

restart in safe mode:

-shut down your laptop.

- press and hold shift key, press power key, keep holding the shift key until the apple and spinning gear are on the screen, then release the shift key.

Finder, GO, Computer, MacintoshHD/Library/Preferences: drag anything with “windowserver” filename to trash.

Finder, GO - hold down the option key (you will notice the list changes to include Library), Library/Preferences/ByHost: drag anything with “windowserver” filename to trash.

Empty Trash (if anything left in trash, then go Finder, Secure Empty Trash)

Then restart.

This worked for me. Good luck.

Running 10.9.4 with GTX 770 with MacPro 3,1. This has solved my issue. Second monitor on DVI-D port now is working. I am going to attempt to install CUDA to see if I can get back to work with Premiere.

down load kext utility here http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/Kext-Utility.shtml

download Kexts here https://www.dropbox.com/s/a510p6a9immdboc/Kexts.zip

unzip the file

delete all Geforce and NVDA kexts located in your system/library/extensions

open kext utility and drop the all the kext files you downloaded on the window

wait till complete

reboot

now all monitors working again!

gatd4's solution worked perfectly for me! It might not work for non-NVDIA Macs, but it worked on my 2008 Mac Pro. Thank goodness - good luck!

And trust me, I've been an Apple user since '88, and Steve Jobs was just as capable of screwing things up as anyone else (he was not a perfect man). I still miss him but I'm not going to blame any problem that occurs because Steve is not there any more.

Rather let Apple know there is a problem, as this forum is just a way to get fellow Mac users to try and help.

I also called tech support and im with a senior technician. under 10.9.3 my display thunderbolt to displayport was working. under 10.9.4 not anymore. i ccidentally told the support it was thunderbolt / minidisplay to dvi instead of displayport.

but since i read you guys have the same problem with dvi, i guess it was still right to do so. and i also guess apples engineers must have seen what kind of connection it was, displayport or dvi right?

anyway, they had logs from 10.9.3 and 10.9.4 . now they called me again and told me they would send me an apple minidisplay to dvi. and see if this works. i guess ill be getting it on friday and check. still though i dont get why they cant figure that out.

Telling us (fellow Mac users) will not improve the situation. You need to communicate with Apple.

With cautious hope, i note that they re-classified my filed bug (17083693) no longer as a duplicate of another issue and re-opened it, now asking for the dongle make and model i'm using. (This happens for me with either a "Apple Mini-DP to Dual Link Adapter" (Part Number: MB571Z/A) or a Cable Matters DisplayPort cable). ...fingers crossed for a 10.9.6 fix...

You should really file a bug at https://bugreport.apple.com/ -- the more data they have, theoretically the better they might be able to fix their display issues.

(I'm ignorant on that model of the MB Pro, but the tech specs list two graphics chipsets (the on board Intel HD 4000, and the NVIDIA GT 650M) -- is one driving the laptop's screen and the other is devoted to whatever external displays there may be? )

When both screens go black forcing you to reboot, have you tried instead (if you have another machine on the same network) SSH'ing into your laptop and killing the WindowServer process? It's plausible that kicking it into restarting itself might rescue the display in the new configuration so you needn't reboot.

Sep 27, 2014 11:14 AM in response to altoronto

I wish the altoronto solution worked for me, but now instead of it periodically sending a signal out the displayPort / thunderbolt, it no longer does ever.

I got a reply on my Apple bug saying 'we think this is fixed in the Yosemite Developer Preview, could you please try that.', which underscores how incredibly out of touch Apple QA is with its user base; to presume that i could simply take the machine i rely on for work and install less than beta software on it, is totally cuckoo banana.

(... and the implication that they won't bother fixing this for Mavericks but instead rely on the notion that users will suffer through the regular crappy quality of Apple's dot-dot-0 and dot-dot-1 releases of new OS for a fix is somewhat infuriating.)

I'm surprised the altoronto solution is not a fix for most.

It's unlikely to be anything other than a software issue in my eyes.

Have you guys meticulously followed his instructions and dragged each and every "windowserver" filename to the trash in the locations specified. There is a great wee app called "EasyFind" which is good for making sure you haven't missed any. If you have gone at it half-heartedly because there are a million possible solutions on this thread now, give it another go "like a BOSS!!"

on a mac mini (mid 2011) same issue since 10.9.3

VERY annoying since mac mini doesn't have a internal display....

Mid-2011 Mac Min specs:

Processor 2,7 GHz Intel Core i7

Geheugen 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Videokaart AMD Radeon HD 6630M 256 MB

now running: OS X 10.9.4 (13E28) (issue occurred since installation of 10.9.3)

Display: EIZO S2433W

Connected via a daisy-linked thunderbolt-connection (in between is a La Cie Thunderbolt drive)

An APC UPS is connected (I just mention it, because some are referring to stand-by settings)

95% of all "wake-ups" I need to power-cycle my monitor to restore image....😟
