Hi Steve,
Since last post I've installed the SSD and OS 10.9 with updates, restored from my backup--and this time it all worked! I visited a local computer store and there's a knowledgeable guy there who found that my user account for some reason was no longer set as an administrator. Don't know why since it originally was that but in any case that's why my password wouldn't work. He also had some software that did an even more thorough check of my original hard drive than Techtool Pro does--and it showed that that drive was aging and beginning to fail. He thought that was why my original attempts to restore from it failed. I followed your advice when installing that OS and it worked fine. I want to thank you for all your attention and help! It made a big difference.
By the way, I saw along the way that the current version of iPhoto is version 11--the ap store only has 9.5. Do you know anything about that?
Thanks again!
Nat.
Glad that worked out. And yes, you will get asked for an administrator password if you try to do certain things as a "regular" user. Probably in the setup something got past you about having administrative privileges, but it got fixed easily enough, it sounds like.
The latest release of iPhoto is called iPhoto'11, (which may stem from its original release in 2011), but the latest version is version 9.5. So the latest iPhoto is iPhoto'11, version 9.5, they are one and the same. Since you have 10.9 now, you can proceed with downloading that latest version from the App Store. I think you'll find that that SSD makes things run very fast also.
