The moment I select an email in the mail app, it is marked as read even though I haven't even looked at it. I checked the mail settings and I did not see any options for changing this behavior. Am I missing something or does Apple believe it's impossible to select an email and without reading it from top to bottom in 30 nanoseconds?
Opening an email = reading an email
Except I'm not opened the email, I'm previewing it.
iOS mail app does not have a preview.
If you tap an email, it is opened (read).
Any mail message can be marked as unread (tap Edit on the mail list, then Mark).
It looks like there is no way to browse messages without marking them as read. I'm going to search for an alternative email application.
you have the option in settings (iPad, not mail) to change the number of lines in previewing emails in the stock app. Up to 5 lines. Perhaps doing so will eliminate the need to open an email.
i Do use gmail and yahoo app rather than the stock app. They both function the same way, once opened, an email is considered read and you must manually "unread".

To be correct it is Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars - Mail - Preview.
