can't open com.apple.iwork.pages..alt-document

Just updated my iMac to Mavericks along with from iWork '09 to the newest Pages (5.2), Numbers (3.2) and Keynote (6.2). Somehow the vast majority of all my iWork documents got converted to "com.apple.iwork.pages.alt-document". Nothing but Preview will open them. Same for the Numbers documents. For instance, when I try to open the Pages Document called "Cleaning Requirements", I get a pop-up box that says... "\U201CCleaning Requirements\U201Dcan\U2019t be opened." I've right-clicked on the document and tried to open it with the older iWorks Pages app (4.3) with no luck.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you...

The U201C etc sound like character transcodings.

Can't tell what is going on. Have you stored these documents on a PC formatted drive, eg Flash Drive, by any chance?

No... Documents stored only on the internal HD that came in the iMac.

Really strange.

Any other details you can give?

Did any Pages '09 files translate successfully?

Do you still have your original files? You will be much better off continuing working in Pages '09 even if you did not have these problems, Pages 5.2 is a PITA.

I have most original files on another computer. I think what I am going to have to do is delete the troublesome files and copy over the originals. I will be able to do this tomorrow and hopefully newest Pages and Numbers will work with them. PITA?
