Fix for distorted sound in itunes ver 7.0

Right-click your mouse button on the quicktime icon in your system tray, then click on quicktime preferences in the popup menu that shows up,...then click on the audio tab(it'll be on the top next to the other ones)....then change the sound out rates to the following:

rate:48kHz or less
size: 16 bit

then click the apply button on the bottom.

then restart your iTunes.

A rather simple fix but it's surprising Apple didn't come up with it on their own. Hopefully one of the Monkey's in charge of coding the most unwanted Quicktime will eventually fix the problem so it supports 24-bit sound.

lemme know if it works for you. 🙂

I have a Creative Audigy 2 ZS, and it worked great for me.

My settings were on 96 kHps / 24 bit / 5.1 audio, and I upgraded to 192 kHz / 24 bit / 5.1 audio (as the box say it supports). Actually I didn't think it would work (because I was tuning it up instead of something smaller), but it did!
What is actually more impressing, the audio is noticeably crisper, clearer, and overall balanced. My home theater now gets some quality workout as the bass is not as obtrusive anymore.

Thanks!
(i just registered to thank you actually, thruth is i'm impressed on what I'm hearing).

I have a Creative SB Audigy 2 ZS.

This fix worked for me. Sampling rate above 64 kHz causes a "skipping" sound. Sampling size above 16 bit causes horrid "scratching" distortion (almost unlistenable).

Of course, my hardware supports sampling rates to 96 kHz and 24 bits, but don't tell that to Apple 🙂 I assume they will fix this shortly.

By the way - I since the poster directly above me has the same soundcard, I tried setting my Quicktime prefs to the same settings that he said worked for him. They do NOT work for me - same heavy scratching and skipping noise until I reduce sampling to 64 kHz and 16 bit (or less).

Did this, didn't work. Last night spent two hours on it, got distorted sound to come out; tonight, nothing. I've removed/reinstalled both iTunes and QT, no luck. I've found all the technical notes from Apple, done every step they suggest, nothing. DirectX is up to date, all other sound drivers are working with my card, there is absolutely no explanation for why iTunes won't work. I've deselected all the sound enhancement issues, I've adjusted the bit rate and Mhz in QT -- I quit!

I have the same sound card as you. Thanks for the input; I finally played around and after three hours, got success at 192khz and 16 bit -- the ONLY combination that works. How frickin' wierd is that?

I've tried every possible options and a combination of audio rates, but they all didn't work...
Oh Well, you know what they say...If all else Fails remeber this, "There was an Error Between Keyboard and Chair."

Let's just cross our fingers and hope the monkeys at Apple put out a new version of iTune soon or a resolution to our bellyaches. >:3

I also got success @ "192khz and 16 bit". I have a SB Audigy 2 Value card with version 5.12.8.1164 drivers. I like the added features of iTunes 7 , however does it have to be such a memory hog? 65 - 110 Megs of memory usage is too much imo. The older iTunes used aroun 30 - 50 megs I think, oh well next year I will most likely run 4 GB of ram anyways.

Thanks for the temp fix. I hope Apple releaes a new version soon, this is a serious problem affecting many users.

I tried the work around from 24bit to 16 bit and put it in safemode on the apple player and now I can hearm y music but sound like it cracks and echo's now. Just very poor quality. I would load my old version but then I cannot play any of the new video's I have bought from itunes like surviror. I hope they figure this out soon. I also changed my seetings to 44hz 16bit too! At 24 bit sounds like it's blasting and cannott even make out the music.

Cheers,
azbobs
