Fix for distorted sound in itunes ver 7.0

Right-click your mouse button on the quicktime icon in your system tray, then click on quicktime preferences in the popup menu that shows up,...then click on the audio tab(it'll be on the top next to the other ones)....then change the sound out rates to the following:

rate:48kHz or less
size: 16 bit

then click the apply button on the bottom.

then restart your iTunes.

A rather simple fix but it's surprising Apple didn't come up with it on their own. Hopefully one of the Monkey's in charge of coding the most unwanted Quicktime will eventually fix the problem so it supports 24-bit sound.

lemme know if it works for you. 🙂

My QT setting were the same. (16bit, etc.), but still had crackling/distortion upon playback.

The apple knowledgebase article you mentioned wasn't much help either, as I had NO 3rd pard plug-ins, just iTunes and CIDB.

What fixed my machine was this:

1) Start iTunes.
2) Hit Ctrl AltDel. This bring up Task Manager.
3) Click on the 'Processes' tab and find 'iTunes.exe' in the resulting list.
4) Right-click on it, and go to Set priority, and change to 'Above normal'.

Now, some caveats:

1) This can cause system instabilities, so beware.
2) If you have separate profiles, this needs to be changed in each one.
3) It appears to reset after a full restart.

I should point out that I didn't come up with this, and I can't remember who it was, but I'll find them and give them the kudos deserved.

Bought my iPod a few weeks ago and started using iTunes. Thought it was all wonderful until iTunes 7 appeared. I'm now getting the same problems as everyone else here. Incidentally, I can't help noticing how many other posts are from newly registered users like myself.

Despite all my drivers and software being up-to-date and despite trying ALL the fixes listed (even Apple's own ideas on the subject: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93610), none of them work permanently.

My old Creative Zen Touch and Windows Media Player combination still work fine. Hmmm...

Come on Apple! This is NOT good enough. Give us an update with the software sorted.

This is not the solution for me. I'm already set at
16 bit 44.1khz.

I can grab the Itunes window and just drag it around
the screen for a few seconds and the crackle becomes
permanent. Web browsing, windows sounds, unarchiving
files.... all causes it to get jacked up.

That is what mine was set at; I changed the 44.1kHz to 48kHz and them so far to have fixed my problem. Maybe it will work for you also.
