exporting video to youtube

I Have a camera that records AVCHD...once I put my card in and import, I start editing in FCPX...when I export, I export to h.264 to publish to youtube...my question is, am I getting the best quality possible? Or should I export to ProRes 422 then use that file to convert to H.264? I hope this makes sense...

You Tube will recompress anything you upload.

Some people skip the H,.264 compression and upload Pro Res; of course that's a much larger file and increases the upload time. Personally, I find the H.264 version woks perfectly well.

It's possible that you might get a slight improvement by uploading a Pro Res file directly – saving one generation of compression loss, Depends on the material.

Do a couple of short test with challenging material.

Good luck.
