Macbook pro runs slow

Hello,

first appearance here, guys 🙂 It seems that age or other digital debris is taking over my MBP. I followed this thread, in which John Galt and LexSchellings were being very helpful in solving other people's problems with slowness so now I'm trying to do the same (this thread: My MacBook suddenly started running slow ).

I used OS 10.6 until very recently but now updated to 10.9.4. I first noticed the slowness in Diablo III game and now I kind notice it watching movies in VLC. Sound comes first that motion.

Anyways, I downloaded EtreCheck and am pasting the results here, hoping the community could give a hand in fixing this problem.

Thanks in advance,

druidmars,

Perian isn’t supported under Mavericks; uninstall it. Does your installed version of Paragon NTFS support OS X 10.9.4? Which version of iStat Menus do you have installed? You have two different versions of the Gmail Checker extension for Safari installed; uninstall the older one. Your installed version of Silverlight is outdated; you can download the most recent version from here. Depending upon your usual set of simultaneously running apps, you might find that an upgrade from 4 GB of RAM to 8 GB could be helpful.

Thank you for the quick reply. Amazing! Now, here's what I did meanwhile:

-unistalled Perian through the system preferences. However, it's still showing the icon although it says not installed.

-updated istat menus but it's now erratic and not showing properly. I'll uninstall it

-updated silverlight

-checked for updates in NTFS but there are none at the moment.

Question: how do I uninstall the gmail checker? It used to be a button on safari but it was no longer working. Then safari itself died until I got the Mavericks, and I had to change to firefox, so I guess I can uninstall both

I am thinking about upgrading to 8Gb but it just annoys me because I never experienced slowness before.

Thank you again

PS: I think I managed to uninstall gmail checker.

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.

For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? When did it start to be slow? Did you change anything just before it started? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

Jul 7, 2014 1:43 PM in response to Linc Davis

I've been experiencing slowness since yesterday. It started while playing Diablo III. I tried to solve it within the game by changing the resolution, frame rate, and shadows. Nothing seemed to work. I also noticed slowness in two other situations: in VLC, where the movies seem to be a little out of sync, i.e., sound comes first than movement; and lastly in booting and shutting down. Whereas I never timed this operation before, it seems to be taking longer.

I have not installed anything else. In fact, in the last hours I've been uninstalling stuff as suggested.

No errors nor alerts. The only thing I did was to enter in recovery mode and examined the hard drive as I saw suggested in another post.

I have a backup but I don't think it will work. I'll explain: my external hard drive where the back up is, is in NTFS and not the "weird" mac format with journaling or whatever the name.

Jul 7, 2014 2:36 PM in response to Linc Davis

While the back up is underway, is there anything else I can do?

I can't see any slowness now, but in Diablo III. The game starts normally and after a while it becomes slower. If I change to the desktop and use vlc, safari or others, they too get slow. When I quit the game everything comes back to normal. This is my situation now... sigh...

1. Reset the System Management Controller (SMC)

2. If there's no improvement, see below.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.

If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair

Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

Jul 8, 2014 12:21 AM in response to Linc Davis

Thank you for your suggestion, Linc Davis.

After reading the indicators listed on the link you provided about how to reset the SMC, it's clearly not my situation. My MBP is not erratic so I not even sure it's necessary (recommended?) to reset the SMC?

So after a fair amount of time testing different scenarios/situations, I realize that it's only within the game I get this slowness (again this never happened in the time of OS 10.6, nor in the first 5-6 days of mavericks). Would you say that the RAM upgrade could solve the problem?

Jul 8, 2014 12:52 AM in response to druidmars

Your hosts file has been compromised: you have used a keygenerator to hack software. The permissions are changed too. I strongly advise to uninstall that software if it is still on your computer (this wil not rectify your hosts file, but that is less of a problem). Or you used TinyUmbrella, which also is a cause of compromising your hosts file. Uninstalling it will do. After this the changes in the hosts file are harmless. If you insist we can correct it later.

Some advice to trim your mac:

Perian is in your SystemPreferences, it is not installed, you just have to remove it.

If you do not absolutely need the NTFS driver, uninstall Paragon NTFS driver.

I propose to remove all three Safari extensions, they do nothing special for you.

Take all items out of the SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems, with the minus sign underneath.

I propose to uninstall MagicMenu.

Afaik Roxio is not compatible, I would uninstall it.

Hello again. The site was down for most of the day.

Being a guy who made the transition from PC many things are not evident to me.

1-How do I edit that string in SystemPreferences to remove to log in items?

2-How do I remove perian?

3-I removed the gmail checker from within the Safari but it seems it's still there so how do I remove it?

Yes, as I keep working with a PC I need the NTFS and also, I used some key generators for istats menu, which is now uninstalled and for a few other programs: lightroom, carbon copy cloner, filemaker and lightroom. Roxio Toast was working fine with snow leopard but I haven't tried it with mavericks yet. It's the last case of keygen usage.

@Linc Davis: you know better than me, that's for sure so I will try resetting the SMC.

Thank you
