How do I remove photos from iPhone?

I recently deleted all my photos from my iPhone 5, but when I plug it in to my computer, the iPhone summary still says I have photos taking up space. I verified I have no photos left on my phone. Why isn't the phone updating to show none left and therefore free up the space?
