I have an Ipad and the screen in black. when I charge it the screen lights up ever so sightly I can still hear my notifications... I don't know what to do?

Try resetting it. Hold down the sleep and home keys for about 20 seconds. If you see the silver apple, it's rebooting. Mine did that once and that's what it took to get it back.
