copy pictures from ipad to windows xp

Have the new ipad mini and need to find a way to move/copy pictures from the ipad mini to my windows xp machine. Thought xp would treat the mini as an external drive but it does not show any picture files on the my computer> my ipad>

If you open iPhoto it should.

The following has instructions: iOS: Import personal photos and videos from iOS devices to your computer

The following troubleshooting document may also help: iOS: Unable to import photos to computer

Note that the photos in question must be in the Camera Roll on the iPad. If they were transferred to the iPad by syncing from a computer using iTunes that would be one explanation of why they wouldn't be available for a transfer from the iPad.
