Can I force my AE into full duplex mode?

Older version of Airport Utility (5.6) allowed you to change it. What version of the Airport Utility are you using?

Unfortunately no, since Apple's "upgraded" AirPort Utility 6.x application removed this feature, along with about 20 other useful items.

You might be able to "trick" the AirPort Extreme by using a simple Ethernet switch between the modem and the AirPort Extreme. While the Ethernet switch may not allow you to make adjustments to the port settings, it will generally do a much better job of negotiating than will the AirPort Extreme.

It will appear that you can change the setting using AirPort Utility 5.x......but the change will not "stick" after you try to update the settings on the AirPort. The AirPort will still be set to "Automatic" due to different firmware in the newer AirPort and Time Capsule.

Apple Support confirmed this recently, as did the local Genius Bar, after we tested at the Apple Store.

The puzzling thing is if the ISP says Fdx100 (or Fdx1000), and the Extreme wants to negotiate and fails at lower rates, it should be able to set it to the right Fdx setting.

Simplification sacrifices flexibility. I still refuse to use 6.x, but someday I may be forced to. 😢

Hi Bob - I use Airport Utility 5.6.1 for Win on my a/c's and can change to any WAN port configuration and it sticks after the update - Twtelecom requires 100 full duplex and it works fine.

Just tried again. Won't stick. The setting returns to Automatic after I try to Update.

Genius tried this on a store stock AirPort sample at the Apple Store. Same results.

Just for fun, try to change the Radio Mode setting on the "ac" router from Automatic to another setting and click Update. Then, go back in and look at the setting again. It's back at Automatic here.

Can you post the Airport model and firmware version on which this works?

Bob, it is likely that you and CRMDVM have two different devices on two different versions, and it works for some combinations.

I have Time Capsule, 802.11ac version, Firmware 7.7.3.

AirPort Utility 5.6.1 running on a Snow Leopard Mac laptop.

The Genius tried on an AirPort Extreme 802.11ac at the Apple Store (did not notice firmware version) using AirPort Utility 5.6.1 on a Windows partition of a Mac running Mavericks.

Sure I just switched between auto and 1000 FD and back with no problem - I have a Thomson Docis 3 Modem/wireless router in dumb mode with the wireless disabled - it is connected to the Apple Extreme A/C A1521 Router version7.7.3 - it is connected to an HP desktop running Windows 8.1 and Airport Utility 5.6.1 - I do all of my setups manually from factory default settings.

You are right I just tried to change the radio mode and it didn't work - go figure!
